Hey, new here, I worked for a local company doing ramp work delivering to stores locally. This was my second company I've been with in the past 10 years(not a company hopper). I have 8 years of company driving experience just refer trailers. At the previous company I did the same thing except it was more food service. Long story short I was involved in an accident. No violations, no citation or inspection but company tractor was towed ( not totaled, no rollover); did do a Police report. So I know it will show up on my MVR, I was let go but Ive been looking for other company jobs with some interest in me; which is a positive sign. Lately, I've been thinking of buying my own truck. Talk to few friends about getting started. It seems that the best way to go is trying to work for another company under their authority, until you learn the game. Trying to get a plan in order but just worried about insurance for the truck and loads. I know with some companies you pay them for their insurance but will any of these companies even consider me running their loads with my own truck with the one recent accident. The last thing I want to do is buy my own truck and not be able to start out. I am a fast learner and motivated but that means nothing if i can't get my feet wet. I live near Chicago and people are telling me their is money to be made running the rail-yards and just why not be my own boss. Just going to shop around for trucks and talk to a financial planner about getting the business up and running but again if I can't get hooked up with a company under their authority I am doomed? Thank you for your help.

Best way to find out about insurance cost is to call an agent and ask them.
Have truck and trailer information for something you might buy.
Good luck. -
Thanks, I am going to call around to some o/o company to see if they will work with me, just leary of companies telling me what I want to hear come back in a week and it's a different answer. I want to look around for trucks. Lot FL dd-13 and Volvo dd-13 out there for sale. Not going to make a desperate decision. I would prefer to find a Volvo around 30k around 500kmikes. Work to bankroll for any overhaul and any maintenance issues. I am lucky right now in where I can take my time. You here or read allot about bad situations. But if I can manage a start with a good reputable small o/o company I might be own my way.

First, I've had a "Not at fault" accident and haven't had any issues with getting insurance or being hired. I hit a cow and my truck had to be towed..15k..ish damage.
If you buy your own tractor and run under someone else's authority you'll only need "Non-trucking liability". Mine had cost me right around $4k per year, fully insured for 55k physical damage. Since the carrier you would lease onto is responsible for safety, they are the ones buying the cargo and carrier liability insurance. Typically you still pay the added cost via a weekly deduction or it's taken out of % of load.
If you decide to go after your own authority, this is a game changer. Get a quote before you do anything else..
Start with Progressive. Although credit, MVR and years of experience play some role, being a "New entrant" is where they justify slamming you with a super expensive policy. For me, new entrant insurance would have been $29,210.00 in Florida...that's not including any finance charges. -
Good luck and keep us posted.
