I've always loved big rigs. I've wanted to half-heartedly drive one for years, but I've been thinking more seriously about it the past few months.
To begin: My name's Austin. I'm 19. I currently reside in Libby, MT (Hwy 2, about 30mi from Idaho, 60mi from Canada). I was born and raised in the Dallas area.
Last July I decided to move to Montana and live with my mom. I packed up my truck (4 wheeler) and hit the road. That was the longest drive I've ever made- much less solo. But, I LOVED it. I'd never been out of Texas before and it was quite an experience- especially once I got to the Rockies
I drove back to Texas for spring break a couple of months ago. I spent the time watching this beautiful country go by, as well as the various trucks. I think I looked at every license plate, too, lol.
During my 6,000 solo miles across the country I started to feel like a trucker and I want to at least try it.
Anyway, I know that you have to be 21 for an interstate CDL, but Montana lets you get an intrastate CDL at 18.
There are some small companies around here that might hire me- Environmental Restoration (Works with EPA to clean asbestos- operates dump trucks), Troy Mine, etc.
How hard would it be for me to get a job at my age?
More importantly, where do I find a training school around here? I did a search and found one in Missoula (about 200 miles): sageschools.com
Has anyone used this school? Thoughts on it? Know of others?
Or, do you think it would be best to wait until I'm 21? I've thought about going to a local community college for 2 years of basics, then trying trucking.
Thanks drivers.
Thinking about joining the industry

Sage is a good school. If you're just bouncing around right now and want in and know of a place that will hire you, go for it. All states offer a CDL at age 18, which means INTRASTATE driving only until you reach 21. But, you have to remember a lot of companies want 21 because of insurance regs.
Oren09 Thanks this. -
Allow me is right.....Even though you get an intrastate license you still cant get hired anywhere....I got a friend with a younger brother and he wanted to go to driving school so bad and did and got his cdl right at 20 yoa and he couldnt get hired anywhere....The school fooled him and took his money #### crooks

If you go on the road, work on getting your college education during your off time! Keep your options open! Nowadays you can get your education online with some pretty reputable schools, University of Phoenix being the best.

Thanks for the replies.
I'm just going to do two years in the local junior college and get the basics out of the way. That way I have a start to a degree should I need to or choose to pursue further education.
I'll get my CDL when I'm 21. -
