My long-time girlfriend and I are currently thinking about team-driving, ideally working for Con-Way Truckload from what I've seen. We're about to enroll in Road Masters driving school, what I'm wondering is that if we both go through the school and get our CDL will we be able to hired on and train as a team before going on our own? Any thoughts appreciated.

Ive heard of some stupid companies sticking couples with one trainer, but that would be a claustrophobic nightmare for me. Most companies are gonna split you two up and put you individually with separate trainers.

How are you going to train together as a team? There are only two seats...

You should go through get your cdl drive for 6months and have your girlfriend get her cdl when you are about done with training. This way as soon as you get your own truck you can train her yourself. Ideally it would be better if you find a company that will train you together, But its going to be hard. Good luck

Covenant trains teams all the time. Have about 40-50 trainers that work exclusively with 2 students on the truck. After graduation, the 2 students then can team together full time.

I was thinking Covenant, too. From what I've seen they seem to be a more team-driver oriented company than the rest of the big companies. Any advise on what to expect the first year on the road as a team?

From what we've seen, it's kind of what you make of it. Hazmat is a big deal and pays off. No way I can guess money but I know haz drivers get about $6000-7000 more per year each. So for husband wife team that's about $15k. You need to figure on running 5-6 weeks at a time if you can then a week off. Can't hurt to call recruiter and decide for yourself. Every carrier is good and every carrier is bad. That's trucking.

Thanks for your input, what can a first year team expect to make the first year out? Do teams usually get more miles than solo drivers...there's still a lot I have to wrap my head around.

Teams get WAY more miles because the truck never stops moving. Most companies LOVE teams for that reason. Think of it..A solo driver has to stop the truck for 10 hours a day. Teams drivers only have to stop the truck to do load checks and to drop/hook.

True with some companies but not all.... there are plenty of teams that sit waiting on freight. You see 'em everyday in the truck stops.
