When ever the oilfield slows again I'm probably going back to food service. McLane or US Foods are both within a half hour from the house. I'm young enough still to tough it out long enough to get a decent bid run
Thinking about US Foods or Sysco

I like my bid i have now though I'm not crazy about my day off (thuraday, Saturday and Sunday) I would rather have 3 in a row off but I think I'm looking a gift horse in the mouth on that deal lol. My 2nd year I ran a 5 day route and the money was nice but I much rather make a little less and be home 3 days lolBrettj3876 Thanks this.

Out here the guys who are off on Monday or Friday end up having to go in anyways since those are the busiest days. At least with a midweek day off you know there are plenty of other drivers available to fill in.speedyk, Cardfan89 and Brettj3876 Thank this.

Sysco Eastern MD is the one in my area. Super corporate all about safety safety safety. 1 week of in class training and probably 3-4 weeks of having someone ride with u. Crazy busy during the summer but right now guys are only working like 3 days a week cause there really isn’t any work. I think with food service it just depends on the area. Here it’s super busy during the summer and dead during the slow seasons.

i salute/admire all you foodians. i would not do this line of work again, unless it paid minimum $2500 gross per week AND 4 day work week AND home everynight AND daytime hours only AND M-th, or tue -fri, sat and sun completely off.
If i had a restaurant or store (and this might not be out of the question someday), i would just have you drop the pallets and i/we would wheel it in----because we need it where we want it. This way it only gets handled once. It's a waste to have the driver bring it in and then have the store move it again. But most people who have restaurants and stores are stupid.
Here's another thing to think about: Trash may not pay great and, i think, a lot of the work is at night, but it is an alternative to food and likely less work.Gearjammin' Penguin Thanks this. -
A lot of the places in the beach area (Ocean city) that I delivered to was kinda like that or we would bring it off the truck and they would send people out to put it where it needs to go. Usually in some outside cooler or storage room somewhere. The perks to these jobs is the free food you get hits the spot lol.

We have a small local restaurant chain that will unload for us, and it is pretty awesome. Just toss it on the tail of the trailer and they’ll stack it and run it in.
The first time I went there I didn’t know about this. They were busy unloading Reinhart so I just did it myself, wondering the whole time why the Reinhart dude had 3 helpers with him. -
We had a Mexican grocery store we dropped at in the hood in south Minneapolis One way alley that you could only squeeze one truck in a time into. The owner would send around six or seven guys out with their own wheelers to help unload You could bang off around 150 cases in 20 minutes and never leave the trailer. A brand new guy got sent there and told all the guys that no one was allowed in the trailer but the driver and was kind of a dick about it The owner said fine and called the guys in and said we could do it ourselves from now on. Needless to say the new guy wasn't real popular with the south Minneapolis drivers after thatjmz Thanks this.

Any insight on the shuttle position at Sysco?. They are advertising for that position but the ad text also states that you may be required to do store deliveries as and when needed. The first thought that crossed my mind is that they use the shuttle position to get guys in then suddenly there is a constant need for that "shuttle" driver to cover delivery routes.
Average pay for a shuttle driver would be good too. The ad claims $67K average which kinda sounds too good to be true for this area. Not saying noone makes that, just that those jobs don't need to advertise as once in, drivers never leave. -
For what it’s worth, US Foods puts the same thing in their shuttle driver ads but I’ve never heard of one of them being told to run a route. It’s usually the other way around, with a delivery guy having to cover a shuttle run.Redtwin Thanks this.
