I'm going to be going to school in a month but torn between the school here in town or attend Millis and work for them.
My main two choices are Maverick and Millis. I know you can make more money with Mav but you don't have to tarp with van. Are the miles at Millis pretty good? What's an average weekly take home pay? Do you keep you truck like Mav as far as taking it home or do they do slip seating? Apus or inverters? CB radios? Anything else I should know about Millis?
Thanks in advance guys, drive safe.
Thinking of attending Millis school...

okay gonna try to answer some of these. Miles are good for the most part. there are slow spots just like in every business. average take home just depends on the person and if you run OTR or regional. I have done both and i was averaging take home about $800 on OTR and $450 to $500 on regional. The trucks are owned by Millis but it is your truck meaning you are the only one that drives it. No slip seats here. No apu and no inverters. You can have them install an inverter as long as it meets the requirements. The trucks do have a bunk heater for the winter. And personally i have no time for anything that would involve an inverter. The trucks have hookups for CB radios but you have to buy your own. Other than that the people are all really great for the most part. The customers mostly love us. and we are respected unlike some places that start with a W or S or C or P.

Sounds pretty good Samurai, thanks for the response. So can you take your truck home or do you have to park it at a center or whatever and drive your pov? Do they have a lease program and would you even recommend it these days? I heard that once I get some time under my belt and comfortable with the industry, O/O is good money. Also I hear financing a truck yourself is better than a lease program. Does Millis only do dry van?
Oh and one more; How's the retirement plan?
EDIT: I lied, I forgot also what kind of trucks do they put you in and are they old or fairly new? -
ok. depending on where you live and how far from a twrminal is the factirs on taking the truck home. i live 45min away so i just drive my own vehicle. plus i have no where to park a semi and trailer. but others take the trucks home. no lease program and i highly advise against going that way. never worth it. i have never been an o/o so i really cant say on that front. but if you were to do it i would reccomend buying your own truck and working for someone like landstar or someone untill you know the ins and outs. it looks like good money but then again truck maint and repairs are pricey.
millis is just dry van which i would reccomend to new people. and retirement? what retirement. as a trucker you will most likely have to work until you die.
the trucks are new 2012 kenworth t700s for the majority. -
Gonna have to disagree with you making more with Mav. "Maybe" they pay more per mile but their trucks are slower and we are on the move. If you are looking at a regional position that is a whole different deal with the the money being 1/2 what OTR make.
It is different per person but consistent 1000 take home OTR is not difficult here. Taking hometime is the killer. You end up with a 4 to 500 dollar take home but you only worked 1/2 the week.
Our trucks are new, nothing over 5 years old. And have all the creature comforts, Bunk heaters, A/C, Refridgerators, Jake brakes. Maintenance here is second to none. 1 week vacation paid after 6 months, 2 more weeks after 1 year. Safety bonus quarterly and another yearly total being 4 to 5000 per year.
I think with a little more research you will find Mav is not at all comparable to Millis.
Just my 2 centspapa16 Thanks this. -
Wow thanks for the great info! You guys got me leaning towards Millis, but to be fair Mav does have more division options for more versatility and pay bumps. I'm not sure how to go about getting hazmat certified but I just want to go OTR and make as much money as I possibly can while trying to stay comfortable as I can be in a truck. Home time is not much of an issue.
I heard Kenworths are nice, with an inverter do you think I will be able to use my laptop? Do you guys have one? -
you just have to study and take another test to be haz certified. Yes you can use a laptop. I just use my phone for everything so i dont need a laptop. BUt i know plenty of guys who use them.

What is Millis' position on idling, are you allowed to idle in the dead of winter? Or are you just to use the bunk heater to keep warm while sleeping, and if so how is that working out for you all in the freezing weather? Also, I have some time off from current job over the holidays and was thinking of making the trip to Trenton to check out the place and maybe get a chance to talk with some drivers etc. Is this recommended by you guys or should I talk with a recruiter first? I won't be starting a trucking career for another 12-15 months so any advice would be most appreciated...thanks, and be safe out there!

Majorpotatoe: Could you please elaborate about home time? According to their website and the recruiter, Millis is very good about home time.
How often do you get to go home? And for how long?

I am a new driver. I've been by myself 1 month or a little over.I am averaging 24-2900 miles a week, I am making 31 cent a mile. I have a 2010 T2000 with 426000 12000 of my own miles. I average 600-800 bring home so far, and I'm just learning the ropes. Millis is not comparable to another company that has a school. I have been treated with a lot of respect from everyone here. My dispatcher says good morning Mike every day not Hey truck 21032 get your ### moving! Like some bigger companies. They want idling below 40% which is a lot of idling IMO I have a 2%idle this month. Feel free to PM for my phone number and I we can text. I'm a straight shooter 3 months ago I was in your spot.
