I use a 4X formula. What fuel is per mile I need 4X that per mile or my truck doesn’t get loaded. If fuel is $.70/mile I need a minimum of $2.80. So far it seems to be working and there is no lack of loads paying at least that. Also the truck brings in money while rolling. I don’t get paid for loading and unloading so I try to stay over 1200 miles per load.

Look the Werner case was convoluted, read the summary of the case, see what happened and why they just paid it and moved on.
You ain't no Werner.
So you get into an accident, your assets are all on the line.
I don't care how you structure your other assets to hide them, lawyers will find them, have the court attach them and they will be part of a settlement consideration. These lawyers specialize in trucking cases, one lives near me, he is on TV a lot and isn't afraid of destroying someone to get their clients money, pure POS lawyer.
So you risk a lot more than you can believe.
OK that said, listen to the people who are telling you this is a bad time to get into this.
you won't make it if you try to divide your time up with another business.tscottme and Rubber duck kw Thank this. -

@blb078 --
One way to get into the business that may (or may not) be of interest to you is to start out with USA Truck:
USA Truck - CDL-A Student Truck Driver Jobs For Recent CDL-A Graduates (driveusatruck.com)
Why?
You don't say where you are located--but if you are in USA Truck's hiring areas, after a year of driving with them, you would qualify for their self-dispatch program:
USA Truck introduces Drive Your Plan company self-dispatch program – USA Truck (usa-truck.com)
This self-dispatch program is the only one of its kind in the industry of which I'm aware.
The above would let you get your feet wet as a driver with a company that works with beginners, and then later start working a load board with much less legal (or other) liability.
After you did all the above--there will then probably be a lot more blood in the water (so to speak)--and a better time to invest in your own equipment, & start out as an independent.
The above would also be a pretty good way to decide if you really want to further pursue the trucking business, anyway.
Disclaimer: No, I'm not a recruiter for USA Truck. And have never driven for USA Truck. I have no friends or relatives that drive for USA Truck. I have no investments in them, either.
But I do think the above self-dispatch program is well worth a look (or knowing about) for aspiring owner-ops, or those later looking to do their own thing in the business.
