And worked it off too. Remember for me food was fuel for that lumping or a thousand miles. Wife taught me to do better away from the truckstop, spend about a few hundred max every other month on food cooked in the cab. That worked out well for TWO people. Otherwise the retail truckstop 3 meals a day would be impossible.
I also recall times where it's a bowl of chili for 5 days.
As far as the magic income? There isnt any. Stay out of debt and build savings however small each pay day. For us in Arkansas it's 17K, filing taxes turns out that it's a break even. No taxes and not much refund. No problem. Getting past say 23000 and up causes a bigger tax to the state, not so big for uncle sam until 50K.
Getting the house paid off then cars etc was very important. At that point It's money towards savings or major repairs that will come up later in the future. I think our old house required approx 110K in repairs of all kinds plus improvements over 14 years. It will never get that money back but it sold easily within modern codes and it was a better house than it ever was. I would not be afraid to buy it back knowing what's in it. But it was time to get out of there, and get rid of the student loans that were a big problem. (Approx 36K total for two people, one with a worthless 4 year degree and the other with just enough learning to know enough to get out of IT before it got really bad...)
In the beginning everyone had time to have THREE meals in teh truckstop. 400 miles a day maybe. If that. And the meals were like 4.50 for everything. Today it's freaking god knows how much for a retail meal. You learn to bring you own food and fix it yourself in the truck. Do keep an eye on your tare weight so if it is a reefer going onto a scale you two plus food and fluids might be a thousand pounds over.
Sometimes that food went to keep people fed and warm when they are sitting in the winter ice spun out around you waiting for the freeway to clear. That is almost christmas to some of the needier people now and then who are really hungry and in trouble (Blood sugar etc) But I don't talk about that too much. I don't want to mislead the public that all truckers carry steak and taters with them. -
Well thanks x1heavy
