Just my 2 cents here Kimberly. I moved to Phoenix back in 1990, first job I got was with some fly by night outfit, first day climbing in and out of the truck cut my leg and had to have stiches, then they wanted to dispatch me to LA with steer tires that were bald. Well, walked out and stopped in at Swift. They have nice new equipment, and did so back then, and are a good company to get practical experience. At the time I had 8 years driving back then so I was not looking for experience, but I did HANG in there for a year and give them a chance. Once my year was up I moved on to better things.

First off, trucking is NOT considered an important industry, but a necessary evil.

Yes you are out of touch with the trucking industry.

Of course you husband was very happy to not deal with "management" at Swift. Truckers, don't need management to tell them how to get from point a to point b. Steering wheel holders do. It is MORE, MUCH more scary to deal with desk jockies who have no idea what it takes to get from point a to point b on time.

You work in Human Resources, which means you should understand supply and demand also. When there are 1,000's of applications a week for 100 jobs, there is NO incentive to increase wages, or pay benefits, or provide anything. Why should a company put anyone as their biggest priority? when there are 1000 people waiting to take your place?

I wonder if all the trucks shut down how important an industry would it be?

wonder all you want, it will never happen. It is NOT considered an IMPORTANT industry, but a necessary evil. Just ask what shippers and receivers think. Or what the general public think...

    Trucks are a necessary evil.

There are two sides to this story, but the things the OP is talking about are mostly the result of drivers putting up with it. Why do they do that? Many years experience and still driving there?? Wife thinks it's so bad she joined too???
