The good old days, Sitting in the truck stop restaurant, drinking coffee, eating pie. 2 sets of log books on the table, a stack of fuel receipts. In walks a group of DOT guys. You glance at each other and nod your heat. You continue the task at hand. They sit down and order coffee and pie. Only the old timers remember this time in history.

I didn't have to worry about that much. The first four years I rarely logged anything until the trip was over. I got back from California once, and the company wouldn't let me come to the terminal to turn in my paperwork for almost four days so the time would catch up with me. Got back on Friday, told me to stay home until Tuesday.

There was one company I ran for I would go months without turning in logs. Just wouldn't do them. They would threaten to hold checks until I turned them in. I would start doing them for a few weeks, then quit again for a few more months. They finally just left me alone.

Here are me and my uncle's favorite independent or non-chain truck stops of all time. All are still in business. As you can see, he mostly ran the Midwestern routes.

Big Chief Travel Plaza, Fergus Falls, MN

Clearwater Travel Plaza and Nelson Brothers Restaurant, Clearwater, Minnesota (Petro franchise, but still feels very old-school)

Exit 45 Travel Plaza, Menomonie, Wisconsin

Hixton Travel Plaza/Timber Falls Restaurant, Hixton, Wisconsin

    Jack's Truck Stop, Cullman, Alabama

    JJ's Truck Stop, Malvern, Arkansas

Jane Lew Travel Plaza/Robin's Nest Restaurant, Jane Lew, West Virginia

Little America Travel Center/Hathaway's Restaurant, Cheyenne, Wyoming (limited truck parking)

Pine Cone Travel Plaza and Restaurant, Johnson Creek, Wisconsin

Where was the Derrick? I know Kelly's became the 76, and later the T/A. Can't place the Derrick though. Maybe it was before my time.

Derrick at the same exit as Kelly's. Same side of the freeway, just across the street

Ahh, I know where that is. It's called the Relay Station now. Cafe is called the Outpost. Great burgers.

We used to hit the place on the East side of 30 exit 44 Prescott AR. Was always a 24hr restaurant that shared the parking lot. Depending on the waitress whether or not she had man trouble or the cook was the man trouble determined how the food was. But it was always edible.

Wasn’t uncommon for a dashing young cow hand to get a free meal and offered a trip around the world while never leaving the parking lot. Some accused and I can openly admit this now fear is all that kept him from tryin it out a time or two
