the cb is a tool like any other tool we have at our disposal, and in bad weather, only an idiot would not turn it on to hear what may lie ahead

Vehicles equipped with 2 pounds of C-4 that explodes the instant they reach "too fast".

Motorists tend to believe they will never encounter stopped traffic, so they are not mentally prepared for it.

We ~all tend become accustomed to out-driving our sight lines when visibility is compromised. Usually nothing happens, so "experience" teaches us it's OK, then it becomes habit.

 

Hi gpsman, your 2nd line sums it up best. Many times, these people have never encountered something like this, so they don't know what to do. In the mega pileup north of Milwaukee last year, several motorists WERE hit, because they got out, and probably were in a state of shock, and their 1st reaction is to get out to see what's going on.

To be fair, you seem to assume a driver can get a word in edgewise among those pushing high wattage and using it as a telephone to discuss matters such as the travails of their great aunt who died from "the sugar" in 1964.

 

CBs aren't a panacea, they're just another layer of information.

 

I've not had a CB in my truck for most of the last 30 years driving.
I've never slid off the road, never rear ended somebody, or ran into stopped traffic due to an accident.

I do remember when I had only been driving a truck OTR a few years, having a truck ahead of me yell at me on the radio 'watch out, it's slippery here...' right before HE jacknifed his cabover.

I don't care if you need to wear pink panties on your head while you drive to make you pay attention and drive like you have some brains. If that, or using a CB, is what it takes, go for it. Just don't tell me I need to do the same. I'm not telling you to get rid of your CB.
