I recently went through this, as well. When tires are on the west bars, that’s indication they’re coming up for replacement. When a piece of equipment is in the shop, it’s best to take the opportunity to get it done. However, I had an account manager step in and tell the shop to leave them on the trailer, because there was 4/32” of tread showing on the depth gauge. I refuted with, “It’s my CSA that gets dinged, when a DOT cop refuses to accept the depth gauge and puts me out of service.”. The shop pulled those tires, when that dude left.

No one should ever be questioned, when they’re trying to be safe, by doing the right thing.

All the office staff has had a "safety first" attitude towards maintenance, the shops not so much. I recently had work done on the air compressor at the international shop. While I was there they said all four drive shocks were leaking and needed to be replaced. They were closed for the weekend. I took it to the terminal shop and they just cleaned them off and sent me on my way. I still don't know who was in the right there. If they give me push back on the tires I'll take it to a Speedco or something on my next dispatch.

You need to have a sit-down with your safety director. Go over everything with them. If you have a copy of the invoice showing the leaking shocks being noted, that’d help. If not, they’ll be leaking more oil, until there’s no oil left. That’s a safety hazard, because a suspension that’s not properly damped can easily cause you to lose control of the truck, when the tires are skittering across the roadway.

Kinda sad some of these guys will call themselves mechanics but not take 10 minutes to put a new set of shocks on... there's no company I'd run faster away from then a company that skimps out on their maintenance...there is no reason to run trucks down the road everyday with 10 year old dry rotted tires .. There is no upside to ever doing that. A road call for 1 tire blowout is going to run you 1k easily, that's if the casing didn't take out a fender or airbag or airlines and abs sensors etc... me personally as a company driver I would refuse the drive that equipment until the problems are fixed... a tire blowout can cause you to lose control or could kill somebody in the passenger car next to you... that is somebodys family in that car... Its nothing to mess around with... those tires are ticking time bombs

If you are running down the road all day everyday doing long haul, I would not run anything over 5 years old... that is just my personal opinion..

Yeah, the tech said "it's just dirt". When I scraped it with my finger it was black, so it didn't strike me as dirt. I honestly don't know enough to know whether it's oil or dirt. Like I said everyone I've talked to in dispatch has told me to get whatever done no questions asked. It kinda pisses me off that all this stuff "passed" the first shop's ready inspection when they inspected the truck to pass on to me. This truck has been a giant pain in the ###. It's a 2020 International with 350k miles. The service guy at the International said it was a POS that was prolly a lease that never had regular maintenance done to it.

When I picked it up it had just had the water pump replaced and I got it with low coolant that had to be refilled. The first week I had it the AC compressor went out. When trying to problem solve it looked like both sleeper and cab AC filters had never been replaced. The following week I lost air compressor function and a valve needed to be cleaned and a cartridge(?) replaced. I've replaced the windshield wipers twice now and they still stick and grab in the rain. When I asked the shop if the arms could be adjusted the tech looked at me like I was crazy. Now the shocks I guess most likely need to be replaced and I need maybe 2 to 4 tires.

Anything over 6 years old is a time to replace.
