when a family member was being treated with chemo, we needed a doctors note to cross the border. She set off the radiation detectors.... somebody gave us a heads up before we crossed, so it wasn't an inconvience.
those radiation detectors do indeed work!

I wonder if they able to trace it to a particular machine to determine when it could have been put there

Does anyone remember the incident in 87 in Brazil where a couple guys found a gamma ray machine in the woods, decided to scrap it, and found the glowing blue radioactive part? They were facinated by it and carried it around, I think it wound up being one of the worst incidents in Brazil.
Here is the wikipedia link, it's an interesting read.

I hauled some granite out of Ontario once, a 45,000 lb solid piece. I set off the radiation detector at customs in my lane and the lane next to mine. They really are that sensitive.

not sure exactly.i do know it had some ferrous material that a very large scrap outfit highly desired.the individual in charge of getting it on my dump said it had concrete, dirt, aluminum, steel, iron, and that is all i recall.
oh.let's not forget the radioactive portion.that "load" turned into a fiasco and wasted an entire day when all was said and done.
yeah i know.that's truck driving- -
the scale operators were able to pinpoint the area that had the contamination, stating it was 8 feet from the nose of my trailer.the second attempt(load) had much more.
i was impressed with the technology.Last edited: Mar 18, 2013
