I've always managed to do well going into and out of Kentucky of course it's been a while since I was up that way.. If it's anything like most other places these days it's a world of cheap freight pushers and picky, picky, picky getting a reload...

Once you put your mind to a bottom dollar amount it's hard to go back. Sometimes I think about taking the lesser paying loads and I just can't egt the words out I'll take it. Load going within 20 miles of the house paying 1.33 a mile and it's a no go to. Not going to do it.

I probably would have been all over that partial for 2.12, or at least checked if there was another partial or two available without going out of route to far.

Your right though, partials can be time consuming and hit and miss. I'm working on one now, three parts from IL to TX. I'm gonna have most of the week into it by the time I deliver friday.

as long as my truck turns 1.30 a mile I break even after fuel truck maintance account feed insurance and trailer payment ifta tax and tax prep account. 1.30 keeps everything paid everything over 1.30 a mile is profit granted it doesn't all go into my bank account as I spend more and more on maintance for tax purposes only not to do repairs but buy parts on sale, in bulk and just the good old have on stock reasons....than set some aside for buying more trucks again for tax write offs...we just keep lining trucks up in the field...lol so yea 2 a mile makes me plenty....I can understand cheap freight and again I don't know the specs on what the partial was but 2.12 a mile I would most like have loaded it, even if it was a couple hundred miles throw that on in the morning and run it real quick and grab another long haul....those are the days I tend to make a killing...tired as heck the first day but if you can knock off that short load at a pretty good rate than throw on a good long haul get a nap and run it out and it was a great week....now loads like one I turned down a few weeks ago is a different story. 48k lumber out of NJ to oh for 400 bucks....that's all toll roads alone that is going to cost 150 min than add fuel your in the hole....I called back at the end of the day just craps and giggles and he told me jb hunt covered the load for 350

Did I miss something? $2.12 might be great or crap depending on the dims and when it needs to be delivered. If I have two weeks to get 1 skid to Chicago......

Do you realize how much money your leaving on the table when you haul for less? I called chr thurs on load going 116 miles paid 375, he offered me 400-425 told him it wasn't worth the trouble and said thank you but no. Tuesday load was still there I sent him a email and said you find some money yet? He said what do you want? 650.00 done deal I let it sit and it gained over 50% 4000lbs and 116 miles 8 foot long. I did have to cover it started sprinkling on the way up. I never accept less than 2.40 a mile now my free hauling days ended. I always figure there's nothing coming back so I make it worthwhile to go. I figure miles from home, to pick up, to delivery and back home and I have to have at least a 1.25 all in and it cost me .80 to operate my truck. Thats .45 a mile and the eqauls about 24 dollars an hour driving I figure. work less, make more is my motto. Try it some when you call a broker and it's not what you want or at least 2.60 a mile say Let me think about it, I really need more money. somethings the phone will ring within minutes with what you want and not what they offer. They don't make money if they don't move it. Don't let the thought enter that tells you well somebody else will get it. Who Cares? if everyone else ran through a fire in gasoline draws would you?
It's real easy for me now to say no to them.

depending on the rate and how bad i wanted to go home. i'd take SOME thing home over EMPTY.

i'd like to at least make something, which would be better then going negative from the cost of fuel.

I'm kinda leaning towards Magoo on this one. IMO, there are alot of hidden or intangible "costs" associated with cheap freight.
    1. You increase the risk of a cargo claim
    2. You increase your chance of getting inspected
    3. I can almost always gain more by being home spending time with the family or working on the house or truck vs the layover to PU or deliver (or both).
    4. The next time you deal with that customer they will attempt to use that cheap rate as a basis for negotiation so it will cost you money again.
    5. If a good paying load does become available you must pass it up because you are busy hauling cheap freight (instead of back at home with a fresh reset).
    6. You lose the reputation for being available and you slip down from the top of the call list.

    rollin coal Thanks this.

You missed what my main point is. If you get enough leaving out you will never go negative, you just don't make as much.
Broker who don't move the loads go of business they get the message if you don't haul it. It may take a minute but if your cost or low enough
it will always pay for its self in the end. If gross is down for you and so is miles you may be making more money and not even know it.
