Question occurred to me while the red light flashes and the truck shakes.
What is the difference in the freight that the huge customers (Walmart, Tyson, etc) haul with their private fleet vs. the freight they contract out to the megacarriers?
Thoughts while plugged into a door, is private fleet freight different?

Does the Walmart fleet even pick up their own freight? I always thought they just deliver to stores.

Maybe that's it...I see their trucks moving all around the yard but wasn't sure what they're doing exactly.

I know for Meijer the contractor (JBHunt) and private fleet is distance. The private side does the stores the drivers can be back same day and the contractors overnight runs.

There is no difference. They’re just trying to cover their loads however they can. Their sales side has simply outpaced their logistics side. They all backhaul their own stuff, when possible. But, again, sometimes they need it sooner than their own drivers can grab it. They hauling their own stuff, with their own drivers, is cheaper than contracting it out. And, saving that money is why they have their own transportation divisions.
