So I’ve been a company driver for the last 14 years. Always had the “ itch” , really right from the beginning. I always tried to keep my eyes and ears open and mouth shut when collecting information on going owner op, but now I got to open my trap and ask a question I need help with.
So from running theoretical numbers over in my head I have an idea of what I’d bank to the business’s bottom line and need to know how far off I am.
    Leased to a carrier
Based in western pa ( close to I 70)
Running dry van freight possibly cans
    Roughly $700 month truck note
Paying myself as a driver $750 a week

Can it be done and be home a few times during the week and weekends, and at the end of the year would it be possible to put around $10000- $15000 a year into the business savings? This is best case senecio with no major issues I’m thinking . Or am I far off?

    Thanks

Nobody can give you a definitive answer, nor should they. Trucking has a lot of variables.

What I can tell you, is your goals and expectations appear to be more than reasonable. If you get on with a good carrier that has regular out and back freight, yes I think it's doable. I would stay away from cans though.

Yes. And you'd not have to fool with containers.

I don't know if anyone can answer that.

Until after this election and well into the next year like maybe the summer or later until then it's going to be a bad time for anybody to get into this. There's just too much uncertainty.

What are your personal bills? How much debt do you have how much money do you have to start? Do you have a girlfriend that likes diamonds and Furs and Ferraris? Do you have 20 kids by 20 different women and you have child payments and house payments and Harley-Davidson payments and truck payments and you spend money on your girlfriend and then you spend money on the other girlfriend that the first girlfriend doesn't know about and then you spend money on the wife that doesn't know either one? Are you putting those 20 kids through college? Did you just purchase a million-dollar home and you have a colossal mortgage?

No offense but container work is generally the bottom of the barrel as far as rates go.

And it also depends on what's going to happen with this uncertain economy, whether you're the dispatchers favorite or whether all the good loads go to his favorite and you get the scraps...

There are a lot of variables only you can answer that question I think.

But just a suggestion I think you would do better to look into leasing on to someone like Landstar or mag carriers or someone like that rather than pulling cans.

Thank you guys. Yes I really don’t want to mess with containers, was just worried about needing to stay out for weeks on end chasing money. I currently have a quite literal 9-5 Monday through Friday union gig with a private fleet, but I know there our others like me, no matter what your doing pretty much 7 days a week trucking is on my mind, always has been:eek:. Just think I’d be happier doing it more for myself at this point.

It's all consuming no matter what you do. Local you just have a bigger sleeper ( bedroom).

I did local taking care of my Dad. If not for that, I worked so many hours, always around my 70, I'd just have dropped a 5th wheel in the yard and lived there.

You're in a good spot to do a regional thing.

I'm from South Eastern PA. I was actually on Route 70 a couple days ago.

I have my own numbers so I don't know if that helps you but I could probably go home everyday if I wanted to.

I have just found that for me it's easier to make money and it's just works better to stay out maybe two or three days at a time. Although some of those days I could come back past my house I just don't like stopping at my house for 10 hours and leaving. I would rather go to right wherever I'm picking up and stay in the truck.

I would think if You're leased onto the right company it might be even easier for you to get home because they have access to return Freight and Freight that runs through certain Lanes.

But the area that you are in I don't see any reason why you couldn't get home a couple times a week.

That's just finding the right company. Or going somewhere like Landstar or mag carriers where you pick your own Freight.
