Good evening all. I have a few questions I was hoping some one might be ableto answer. Just got a ticket in MO for being over lenght. I have a 5307ezxl hooked to a prostar.apparently we aren't consider car haulers in this great state. Luckily I only had five cars on so I was able to reload the trailer with no overhang. Still got a citation and a violation. My question is does anyone know the max height a tractor can be in order to have a head rack installed? I'm looking at buying a new lonestar midroof. The sleeper of the flat top lonestar is to small. The Midroof sleeper is 73 inches but it's about 15 inches taller then the flat top. Any insight would be appreciated

    Thanks.

I know we need ,13/6 to clear so I would think 13/3 are 13/4 is what I think

The lower the roof line the better, if you want the cab carrier to be useful. I would not install one on any truck other than a flattop, keep the top of the roof at or below 8.5 foot or you won't be able to load anything up there. Keep in mind, even with the cab carrier you will still be over length, in order to qualify as a car hauler under the Federal rules, or to use the proper terminology, conventional auto transporter you need to meet the following criteria:
The power unit must be capable of carrying a motor vehicle
The overall bumper to bumper length can not exceed 65 foot

This is impossible with a 53 foot trailer, and it is not just Missouri, most states do not allow any overhang, or very limited overhang on 53 foot trailers. Some states allow you to buy a permit, but most will use the Federal definition of conventional auto transporter. I have run high mount trailers for many years, almost 20 between my company driver days and owner operator days, and have taken my lumps a time or two on overhang tickets. Heck, my home state of Pennsylvania won't even allow me to go to my home with my rig since I am 75' bumper to bumper and they have a 65' restriction, and on the road I live on they have a 102" width restriction. Reasonable access would allow me up to one mile, but I am 2.5 miles from the interstate.

Here is the guidance from the Federal Highway Administration and a link to more information as well.

    Automobile and Boat Transporter Combinations

States must allow conventional automobile and boat transporters—those with a fifth wheel hitch located on the tractor frame over the drive axle or axles—to be up to 19.81 m (65 feet) in overall length. Automobile transporters are any vehicle combinations designed and used specifically for the transport of assembled highway vehicles, including truck camper units. Camper units are portable units constructed to provide temporary living quarters for recreational, travel, or camping use, consisting of a roof, floor, and sides, designed to be loaded onto and unloaded from the bed of a pickup truck.

NOTE THE 65' OVERALL LENGTH LIMITATION UNDER FEDERAL LAW, SOME STATES ALLOW MORE BUT ARE NOT REQUIRED TO.

Thank you both for the reply....so I guess I should save my money and forget about adding a head rack.... the only way to be legal on this type of set up is to run with 5 cars. Why do they even make this trailer?

Depending on the vehicles you are hauling and the trailer you have yes. I can build many legal 6 car loads on my Miller, and some legal 7 car loads in the right states. The regulations need to change, last year when the stinger car haulers were granted 5 extra foot of length for the combination and 3 extra foot of overhang there was a push to change high mounts to 75 foot from 65 foot but it didn't succeed. That extra 10 foot would have made many trucks legal. There is currently a tequest to temove the head rack provision that OOIDA is working on, but like so many things with them they have gone off half ####ed without all the facts, they want to head rack temoved but have not addressed the overall length, actually they fought against the length increase for high mounts last highway bill.

What scale wrote the ticket? Have heard both St. Clair & Foristell near St. Louis have been writing over length tickets.
