I SHOULD be graduating from a local CDL school next week and have met with many recruiters. Recently a smaller company called Tidewater Transit Company came in and pitched their company.
They are a tanker and Hazmat company and the job would be regional for me. What do you guys think of Tankers and Hazmat for a new driver?
Has anyone heard of this company? They start out with .41 CPM loaded and .25 CPM empty. They run Volvo 430's on a 5 year 500,000 mile rotation. Is this O.K. for a new driver?
An info would be greatly appreciated.

I know that they run fine equipment and keep them clean. Have never heard any of their drivers talk one way or the other. I think that you would be making a fine choice. Pulling tankers has it over pulling vans or reefers, not to say that there wont be some "[crappy] days", but overall I believe that you will be much happier with a tanker.
I pull a tanker part-time, being retired I got tired of sitting around the house. I tried several driving jobs but I enjoy a tanker over "boxes". -
On occasion, I run across one of their rigs, and have never yet talked to an unhappy driver. I believe they do some chemical work, so you will have to know how to handle the various things that they haul, but they are reputed to train you well, so thta shouldn't be an issue.
And I agree, tankers are the hidden gem of the industry. Too many people think that the only things that they can pull behind their tractors are vans and flatbeds, and that just doesn't happen to be true. There are many things to like about the tanker world, and many of the common complaints from other types of trucking simply don't apply.
I'd give them a strong serious look. -
Hi all,
Well, I went for an interview with Tidewater today and things went well. I did the drug test and did a road test. That 630 Volvo is a far cry from that '92 KW I was training on. The 10 speed gave me a little trouble just because I was used to an 8, but other than that things went well. Just gotta wait for the drug test results, but I got the job.

Good for you Dave! Glad you got it. i just wish they took owner operators, seems to be happy drivers there. Plus they have a terminal in Dalton GA, which is close to the area where I want to move to in Murphy, NC. So if anyone knows of a great spectacular tanker company that has a terminal in the chicago-nw indiana area as well as down south, please let me know. I am currently leased to bulk express out of hammond pulling a tank doing tar and oil products. would like something a bit cleaner so to speak.
Good luck Dave -
While I was doing the road test I heard the trainer mention that some of the O/O's had other types of trucks. I honestly don't remember the exact words. I was pretty nervous and really watching what I was doing. But I do remember him mentioning owner/operators so I am fairly sure that Tidewater has some.
I start tomorrow with them. I admit I am nervous, but I know just to take my time and learn everything I can and do the best and safest job I can.
Thanks for the well wishes and good luck to you too,
Dave
Bushpilot?? Pilot perhaps? -
Well. It has been a few days since I last posted and since then I have started work at Tidewater. So far it has been all of the procedures for tanks and Haz-Mat stuff. Today I was riding with a guy through one of the major chemical plants our terminal hauls for. So far I love it. I am very happy with everything I have heard about the company.
We did some air unloads and pump unloads of the tanks. Not really difficult, just a lot of company procedures to follow.
Hey Bushpilot, are you a pilot? Just wondering because of the nickname. I earned my PPL in 01 and my IFR rating in 02. :smt023
So far so good,
Dave -
Dalton runs a lot of bulk stuff. Not much tanks and chemicals.
Tomorrow I do my first actual pickup and then Tuesday I will deliver it. Gonna be a big next couple of days.

Hi Dave,
PP in 1979 at age 17 and IFR in 81 and commercial in 85. didnt hang on to commercial to long, wasnt worth the effort at the time. you couldnt even make 20 grand on a commercial flying mail. pilot pay sucks until you actually get to be a capt with a major airline. almost made the mistake of going further into school and flying with comair. scary company.
if you get a chance ask if they take owner operators over there. wanted to move near dalton.

Hi all,
I graduated CDL school August 23 and got hired at Tidewater Transit September 5th. I recently completed orientation.
So far I have to say that I absolutely love the company. They put us up in a Hampton Inn for orientation (very nice place) and paid for all our meals (3 meals a day). We were supplied boots and uniforms ($125 for boots, 100 for shirts). I even got the chance to bring an 07 Volvo 630 with 412 miles back to our terminal. They have done everything they said they would.
Nobody has pushed me to get out and start driving by myself. All of the people I have had the chance to train with have been great. These tankers are very different from pulling that empty box around at school.
I will probably start doing some local stuff solo next week. The next week will probably be when I go out on my own.
So far so good,
Dave
