So I got my CDL yesterday and wanted to take a week or 2 off before scheduling an orientation somewhere, however the instructors said not to wait to long or companies wont hire you.
How long is too long to wait before starting training somewhere after getting your CDL?
Time between getting CDL and starting training

You should be ok with a week off but I'd start applying right away. Sometimes it can take a week or two after applying to start orientation.

Just start putting out apps. Some have a date you can start section. Call companies and speak the recruiters and if it sounds good set an orientation date for when you would like to start.

Most ppl have posted 30 days some longer. Before companies start wanting a refresher. IDK
Here's a thought though, schedule your orientation for 2 weeks from the end of your schooling. Give a plauseable reason for it and they shouldn't have a problem. But have that date set and call a time or two, ask goofy questions like "what kind of shoes would be the best to bring til I get back home for the rest of my stuff ?" or " would a sleeping bag and sheets ( blanket ) be good to bring or just the bag and pillow" right before the end of the call dbl check your orientation date and when they are going to send your bus info ( unles your driveing of course).
Of course if you actually come up with "good" questions thats even better.
Edit: I should have put in like the others, apply asap, put in date you wish to start. Most places are 1 or 2 weeks away anyhow. Just don't "loose" the better company cause you want the time off.Last edited: Jul 3, 2013

Since you haven't decided on a company yet, consider a flatbed or tanker outfit and you will make more money annually.

It depends on the company. Some require new/student drivers to be hired within 30 days, some 45. Experienced drivers can get away with a little longer, but, that's because they have experience. Like others have said, call around and apply now, and when asked when you can start, tell them the date. If it works for them they'll say great and get it scheduled. If your desired start date puts you "too far" from your graduation date for their policy, they'll probably ask if you can come in sooner and may turn you down if you say no.

Schneider says any more than three months and they won't reimburse you for the class... plus you need a refresher.

Um, heres the reason you will have to take about a week off. You need a license. When your license comes in the mail, go to orientation. Most states take a lil over a week I think.
I know that at least some companies require your license in hand, is it all of them though? -

Most starter companies either have 30, 60 or 90 days policies for time since being done with school. The majority seem to be 90 days.
