Time for a change...thinking about flatbed.

    I've been driving for about 3 years now, hauling horses in 53' vans, KW W900, 13 and 18 speeds. I got my CDL with this company. Based in CO - I can do the mountains, I can do weather. Have to be smooth to keep the cargo on it's feet. I have a clean record, I run hard and I'm easy to get along with - but I'm not super happy with the company. Driver's are 1099 and really shouldn't be. Pay isn't great for the specialized experience we have to have to handle the horses as well as the ridiculous places we're expected to get in and out of (we're team and paid a day rate - no benefits). I'm looking to make a change. I'm in a position to purchase my own truck - but I have no other experience other than the horses, and don't really want to go out on my own just yet. Considering flatbed, with a move towards heavy haul/oversized, or car hauling - but open to anything. I will need training, but I'm a quick learner. I'd like some suggestions for decent places to check out. I have a phone call with a mid-sized company on Monday. They offer 67% of gross (flatbed), and several other perks (and will train) - but I'm hesitant to sign on without doing some comparisons. I'm a single mom, so home time is important, but I'm not against relocation. Suggestions??

    Family first let all your decision be based on that. What gives you total freedom is running your own trucking company. That would allow you to do local work if you are in the right area. That requires the business knowledge to be successful ( not saying you can't) You could be there for your family. I don't know what your plans are but I know it is challenging for families in the trucking industry even more being a single parent.
    I would look for local work regardless running over the road doesn't work for a single parent (my opinion) I did local work & I'm married with children for the benefit of my family. I just went back to over the road. Our children are grown now. I knew a FedEx ground opportunity that is in the York Pennsylvania area that use to advertise whatever schedule you need they would work with you. I hope the best for you and your family.

    My kids are older, youngest is 14, oldest is 21. The youngest says with the oldest when I'm gone and it works out well for everyone. I'm the sole provider, so I have to take that into consideration as well. I haven't found anything local that pays well, and I don't mind being on the road as long as I can get some time at home too

    Buddy of mine works out of Wal-Mart DC in Loveland made 6 figures last year and longest he is out is 5-6 days. You have to be willing to follow their rules, but good money, benefits, and hometime. Right now they are looking for another 20+ drivers.

    Being a single mom, with a teenager, I think if I were in that position, I'd wanna be home daily. (just my opinion)

    And if being home daily is my preference, I'd look at UPS as a feeder driver. You said you're based in CO, I couldn't speak for that area, but I'm told by two different drivers at UPS in the Harrisburg, PA area that they're hiring people off the street for full time work. Couple years ago that was unheard of. You had to start in the hub and work your way up.

    One of my best friends started September '20. He started at $21/ hour I think. He's now at $28 I believe. Think he said top rate, which takes like 4 years, is over $40/hour.

    Not bad money, if you can tolerate the BS that comes with the job.

    ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

    • Operate a tractor-trailer (single, double, or triple trailer combination) in various driving environments and weather conditions between company facilities
    • Drive for extended periods of time
    • Maintain truck electronic logging device (ELD) logs according to state and federal regulations
