My husband's company does this time recapping. This is new to him because he never heard of this at other companies that he worked for. What does it mean? Is it legal? Can drivers do it or dispatch only? Any info would be helpful. Thanks a lot.![]()

Tire recapping basically takes a bald tire, and throws new tread around it. I don't know the whole process, but that's the end result. Recaps are usually cheaper than "virgin" rubber, so some companies will use them on trailers, or even possibly as tractor drive tires. Recaps are illegal on the steer axle.
That said, I hate'em with a passion. Every flat tire I've had has been a ###### recap. If you go down the highway, and see giant black pieces of rubber lying around, that's a recap that came apart going down the road.hardworkinman Thanks this. -

Time... tire... what's one letter between friends?
As for the OP, the recap is just a rolling summary of on-duty and driving hours for today and the previous seven days. It is done so a driver can keep track of their hours and doesn't violate their 70. Some paper logs have a chart on them where the driver enters their working hours and they can easily see how many of their 70 they have remaining. In the case of e-logs, the computer will automatically be keeping track (a recap) of it.
A recap is not a legal requirement, but some companies may have a policy requiring it. It may also be considered as a way to reduce a driver's delay during inspection as the enforcement officer can more readily see what hours the driver has been working, and what hours they have remaining... which they are going to do regardless, the recap just makes it a little easier to see.123456, brsims and hardworkinman Thank this. -
I've always used paper logs with a recap, even twenty years ago. I can't imagine running without knowing you total hours in the last 7/8 days and what you have available today. I'll bet he has used it in some fashion before.

I worked for one company that required you to keep the recap. None of the others did.

I stopped making my own recaps years ago.
Too dirty for me............hardworkinman Thanks this. -
So.......what do you do with the used rubber now?123456 Thanks this.

Tire Recapping is perfectly legitimate. Studies indicate that they have the same failure rate as virgin tires. There's alot of blame unfairly put on recaps. They are cheaper and will do just as well.
Studies on road alligators and tire debris revealed that the vast MAJORITY of road scrap were virgin tires. You'll notice most road debris has the steel belt exposed in the rubber. Retreads do not have the steel belts in them. Go out on the road see how many scrap tires have the steel belt. You'll be surprised. -
I think he leaves them in the parking lot.

Oh boy, you're in for it now. I started a thread on exactly this topic a while ago.
It went well.
