Hey, trucker for about six months now, working locally as a port driver in the moving industry. My company has been sold to another one that hasn’t had a port driver before. They have a tiny old International tractor, didn’t notice the GVWR but it has only six gears, single axle, no air bags, not really a catwalk…the tires aren’t worn down evenly but instead have these huge chunks out of them, which I was told was from jouncing up and down so hard, presumably because so light-weight. Driving port, I often have trailers with three axles, even four a couple of times. Can a single-axle tractor manage a four-axle trailer??
My first impression was that this truck would not be adequate for the job, but the company has no other tractor, and they are not intending to bring on the tractor I’m driving now. I don’t have the experience to know, please weigh in. Is this truck inadequate? I would like to have some data to know that this will be okay, or to take to the new company to say, You have to buy another truck and this is why. Thanks for your help.
Tiny International tractor inadequate?

Look in the door jamb for the GCWR decal. I highly doubt it’s anywhere close to what you need. There’s no way I’d ever put that light of tractor in front of that much weight. A 6-spd is the first indicator of the truck’s intended use.
You’ll be the one responsible for any ramifications, should something go sideways. Don’t put yourself in that position. If the company doesn’t want to do things right, don’t be a part of that company. Your CSA score/record goes everywhere with you and will directly affect your ability to get future employment. Don’t risk that, your life, or anyone else’s life.Last edited: Dec 23, 2022

It's okay for just a yard horse for moving trailers around a yard, but any road travel, could be risky. Now, moving companies generally don't deal with a lot of weight, so you might be okay, unless they want some backhaul of 40 grand, ask me how I know,,,

International has always built a tough truck!

If it's a class 8 single axle semi there's no reason it can't haul a multi axle trailer as long as the axles aren't over loaded. Should be 12000lbs for the steer and 20000lbs for the drive axle. Although with a 6 speed trans it might be a slow go lol

This industry is filled with “smarter than everybody else BillyBob’s”…. In different ways…handing you inadequate and demanding you perform miracles. It’s you that has to do it. Not them.
Think about it.
Can give tons of examples. -
The company wont replace the 6 speed as long as someone is driving it for them. Even if the company pays any fines they cannot take away the PSP points that attach to your record.
ducnut Thanks this.
