I've been on my own for about 8 months with a great medium size company that trained me and these are a few things that could possibly help a "newbie". They are not in order of importance by any means. The most important thing is safety which a large % of drivers seem to forget.

    1) Don't Complain...they don't care.

    2) Drive from point A to B in a timely manner without hitting anybody or anything. Repeat this process over and over again.

    3) Dont Complain...there isn't always a load with your name on it when you want it.

    4) Keep a safe following distance.

    5) Don't Complain...You should of known about the idle policy before you signed on.

    6) It's a load and it needs to be delivered by you regardless of whether you like it or not.

    7) Don't complain...It's nobody's fault but yours.

    8) Pay attention to the task at hand (See #2) Your new GPS, Bluetooth, Sirius, I-Phone, Laptop, TV, CB is a distraction.

    9) Dont' Complain...It's was in the handbook you signed off of while dreaming about that PC Miler GPS that sits on your dash obstructing your view.

    10) Drive Safely, arrive on time, make good decisions, learn from bad decisions.

    11. Use CB channel 19 and ask for tips if you need it like if there is available parking or if weigh station is open

    12. Ask for help if you are having trouble backing into a really tough spot but you are still responsible for hitting something

    13. Stock up on supplies at Walmart. Before trucking I would buy a week supply of groceries but now I buy a month's worth

A lot of the places I deliver to use the CB to communicate a lot of instructions. It would take 30 minutes walking back and forth to the guard shack to see what they want next instead of a 20 second CB call.

    Truck609 Thanks this.
