did not get to try the idea. the one mechanic who agrees w/ it's the springs, insisted I try opening a different truck, which does have the helper springs on it, and I can open it. so now he on a quest to get mine fixed, was no help with any other ideas.
I'm sure if I launched the hood off, they'd say "it's just for looks, you don't need it, we'll rig some spot lights on the bumper, don't worry about it."
if I can find out part number, or where to look, I'll buy the dern things and replace them that way.
thanks y'all -
step 1: park directly behind another rig at a truck stop
step 2: take 1 end of a tow strap and hook it to the part of the hood you grab to open it
step 3: discreetly hook the other end of the tow strap to the DOT bumper of the rig in front of you
step 4: wait for said driver to pull away -
y'all so funny! lol
I've about give up. boss dont seem to care. others see it as proof that I cant do this job. they insist is not that big of a deal, but it is to me.
if I could figure out how to get stronger faster. just unrealistic tho. oh well.
thanks for the ideas, posting, reading...y'all great -
You can always ask the office secretary to help you, lol, jk.
If it was that hard, I would let the engine do the work. Rig it up with a rope where you can tie the other end to a tree or another trailer and back up.
Or better yet, fill out a DOT inspection report and make them fix it. Sign right here, the spot where it says fixed by a mechanic. -
You could try Fleetpride: http://www.fleetpride.com/truck-parts/find-a-branch-central.html#MO
All the information you will need is on the ID plate. Worst case- just write down the VIN, it contains all the information a parts dealer will need.
If you can't find an auto parts store with commercial parts or there's no Mack dealer nearby, any heavy truck dealer should be able to get you some hood springs that will work. I'd guess that they're fairly universal.
To replace them, just get the hood up, then support it with something (work horse, log, friend, etc). Then take out the bolts, swap springs and viola! Repeat on the other side. Be very careful if you're doing this in high winds, depending on how the safety catch works, you may not be able to engage it. (Just a precaution, the Mack I drive the catch would be operational, but yours could be different.) -
Myself, and most jewish men don't have a problem with a hood...
Maybe some surgery is in order?
