Well here we go! I drive a Ptb. 389 and have driven most anything out there. I'm not the Strongest guy on the block or the weakest. I can open my 389 hood with one hand or arm. I see guys with 389's stepping in the bumper hole ,on top of the bumper you name it. The reason my hood opens as easy as it does is because 1st, i use motor oil on the front hinges, works like a charm. 2nd i use White Lithium grease in the tub, not the spray on all the contact points on the rear of the hood and firewall area. True it can be a little messy, but lasts longer than silicone spray and a little clean up with some Brake Clean and a couple shop rags works excellent. As far as the Company being unwilling to repair THIER equipment, thats total crap. My advice is get some time in,build your experience, keep your eyes open for a Co. that respects you and the equipment they give to drive.

very true, company that will not repair it's own equipment is total crap! but had to start somewhere.
anyway, the one mechanic that agreed with me about springs, cheated yesterday. he insisted he fix a hub seal that'd needed fix last week but no day off to put it in the shop. while he had the truck, he took the helper springs off of one of the other two trucks that till had them.
sure enough, we was right. they may not help some people, but they sure help me enough I can break the hood over and get it up to check everything by myself. I still have to push from behind the fenders, but hey, I can lift the thing! whoohoo.
now when the fight breaks out when XX truck goes back into service and it's missing it's hood springs, think I'll make sure I'm out of the yard early that week.

Then you can taunt the driver of XX truck, asking if they're rugged enough to handle the work! :biggrin_25522:

sure enough, poo hit the fan blades. the regular driver went home and noon and left shop short handed for the day. no repercussions other than I had to take the springs back off the truck I'm driving and put them back on his. (but they 'dont actually make any difference', so I have 'no reason to be angry', yeah, right)
I have googled till I nuts, I not finding the part or part number I need. I keep getting back 'leaf springs', or 'hood hinge', or the whole hood.
what do I need to be searching for? hood springs, and hood helper springs mack ch-whatever isnt working. the closest mack dealer is hours away, and I do mean hours. I called the local parts store, he'll get back to me "next week sometime" if he can even order them at all. what is the proper name for these things so I can search?

You're wasting your time looking on the net. Get the serial number off your truck and call the Mack dealer and tell them you need new hood springs and just have them shipped to you. I would NOT buy them with your own money. If I were in your position they would either buy the parts, or I would leave the hood shut and just drive it until it quit.

    msfern29 Thanks this.

If they don't make any difference, why did he have you swap them back? That's about the worst argument I've ever heard.

I second calling the Mack dealer to get part numbers. I would avoid spending my cash on someone else's truck though. The swap (and resulting fecal fanning) proves beyond a doubt that your truck needs new springs.

That is exactly my point w/ them! But I'm being listed as a whiner, problem, and costing the company money.
Yes I understand the guy who drove this truck before me was strong enough it made no difference, and some other guys who work here have no trouble, but obviously not all are tough enough, I'm not the only one.
Costing the company money? Would seem to me better I check before leave the yard, and be able to check in the field for problems. And heaven forbid something does go wrong; isn't it more practical I can lift the hood and tell them what I see rather than having to have someone come to where I am, then come back to town for parts, belt, whatever? This just daft imo.
I'm convinced is part of 'run me off' attitude some of the employees here have toward me. It just sucks they who I have to deal with to get things done to the truck or ask questions about the truck.
Almost convinced my CDL garbage, won't be able to get on with anyone else cause don't think I'm learning all about the truck I should just cause the people here don't care. I hate the answer ''you don't need to know'' when I ask a question; or ''just ignore it'' when I get a warning light or sensor light. I guess just drive it into the ground, and pray this company's reputation out weighs my lack of knowledge when I get so I can apply elsewhere.
I swear if I hear 'cowboy up' one more time cause the heat doesn't work, or can't shut heat off, I did have mechanic help w/ hood and help me check before I left the shop, I going to go postal!
Call me a whiner all you want, but cold and wet, can't feel my fingers & toes. Or got a warm day, 80degrees outside and truck heater going full blast, windows open, and feel like I going to pass out from heat stroke just no way to drive. These guys putting up on the 'repair board' about the ac already, and we've only had couple warm days, summer not here yet. I'm sure they don't 'cowboy up' when it come to heat!

    Thanks for the help y'all.
Maybe I am just a whiney girl, I dunno. Do know I'm tired of the red spot on my forehead from beating my head against the wall with these people!

Most trucks have shut off valves on the heater hoses that go to the cab. Just follow the hoses that go from to the cab to the engine normally there is a shut off valve screwed into the engine block. Shutting off the valve so the coolant can't enter the heater core will stop the heat from being on.

Yeah, I just have to be able to get the hood up to be able to get to the valve to close it! Have learned some have two valves.
currently I make a choice for the day before leave the yard to be cold in morning and hope weather forecast correct & it warms up in afternoon (or work so late it starts cooling off again); or be warm in mornings, and hope doesn't get summertime hot outside before my day is over. I'm starting to dislike spring weather!
I'll admit I'm skinny and small, but not so skinny and small I can get up in there to reach the valve with the hood closed, lol.
I know, whiney girl, I've got to stop being aggravated by this. It doesn't matter, and no one at this company cares, I shouldn't either. It just feels wrong, ya know?
