I've been driving for almost 4 years and for the first time the truck I have is a automatic. I've only had it 2 days but i am struggling with it. Decided to make a post to see if those who are familiar with automatics could give me some tips or suggestions.

So far i'm still struggling with:

    1. Taking off with rolling back or jerking the truck.

    2. Backing up. (It kinda feels like i'm backing up too fast when i'm pressing on the fuel and when I press lightly the truck stops.)

    3. My biggest issue is going down steep downgrades. I came down MontEagle on 24 and I was told to put it on Manual and use the side buttons to shift through the gears but I ended up riding my brakes the whole time to slow down.

Any suggestions or tips anyone has would be so appreciated. Thanks!

Type of truck? 2 peddle or 3? Does it allow you to shift it manually? There is another thread that is pretty active that maybe you should go check out the title is something like going from Automatic to 10 speed. They are talking about this same thing. I would certainly look at the owners manual in the truck or get with a web site that tells about that truck, you don't want to cook those brakes on that thing. Good Luck.

Will take a bit of practise to get use to. You will find that you will need a bit of accelerator when backing due to the clutch. I always run mine in manual shift and just shift like I do a normal stick. Downgrade slow down and presellect a lower gear. They are not much different than a stick once you get use to them.

The OP is using a 2 peddle you can tell by the way he/she says it seems to back up to fast or stop if not enough accelerator pressure., also said was told to use side buttons to shift. Like I said in my post slow down shift down before you hit the grade that is after all way the highways workers put those signs up telling you the grade is up-comming and the grade percentage and usually the distance. Driving is not a race you have time to do things right.

Its a Eaton Fuller Ultrashift Transmission and only 2 peddles and yes it allows you to manually shift. Thanks i'll try to search to see if I can find the other thread.

I started out coming down doing 10 mph with the jakes on and then the truck started speeding up and my rpms were high and before I know it it was up to 45 and I had a 45,500 pound load. I've come down that hill at plenty of times with my other truck with 45,500 pound loads and never had to ride my brakes like I did today.

Lol I did ask another driver who had a automatic and he told me it's the same as driving a car or a old pickup but I couldn't too much understand what he was saying.

Could just be weak/faulty jakes, assuming nothing wrong with the transmission not holding. Do the jakes not scrub off speed like your old truck under normal braking? Definitely worth having the truck checked out. It wasn't an automatic, but Monteagle in the 05 Century I just traded off was a 10 speed, and 5th gear (highest low-side gear) was needed to control it under max load. Current truck with everything working right goes down that hill safely 2-3 gears higher.

Had a 2012 Cascadia with the DD15 and 10spd Auto and it did fine in 7-8 coming down Monteagle Heavy.
