Well although I had been trained how to install them it was 2 years before I used them... So, i had not remembered how to install them.. I simply walked over to another trucker who was putting them on and he gladly showed me what I needed to do... A few days after that I was chaining up again and I had a driver come and ask me so I gladly helped him out... So, this seems to be one thing truck drivers do help each other with... Just make sure you have the hooks in the right direction....

 

Lay them out, drive up on them, hook them, cam the tensioners tight, bungee the heck out of them. Drive back and forth a few feet if you have the room inbetween trucks, cam any other tensioners that couldn't be turned before and readjust your bungees tight again. Like the other driver said make sure all the hooks on the sidewall are facing out so you don't rub into the sidewalls. If you can check the chains after a couple miles do so until you get the hang of it. I drove for 6 years before ever having to chain because I mostly drove the midwest. Don't feel bad if you lose a couple chains the first couple times you chain up. I know I've left a few over Donners when I first started chaining up when some of those super truckers wouldn't show me how. However like the other driver said, there are some guys that will help.

 

And always remember that chains are just to get you safely to someplace you can park and wait out the garbage weather!

 

Hmmmm chains? I don't care if I have to sit for a month I refuse to chain. I carry chains have to by law. 3 bags of doubles and 1 bag of trailer. Don't ask me why stupid I think. In 13 years of driving I chained 1x. Bet I can still do it but with bad knees (Thanks to flatbedding) I just won't do it. Correct me if I am wrong but chains don't really help all that much, and the cables are even more worthless.

 

To me the worst thing about chaining up are all the backups you have to sit in, because the 4 wheelers are bouncing off the walls.. The rich idiots in the SUV's think they still can do 60 around corners and slide into the walls....

 

PSHAW Driving on chains and wrapping up is th' hard way

Screw a 2X4 to a 4X4. Cut it down to about 18 inches.
Cut a 30 degree wedge off one or both ends
Put a handle on the side, if you like

When chaining, set the block down in front of your tandems (or in back, if you are working the second set) and drive up on it

Hang the chain and hook at the bottom
Repeat for other axels

If conditions allow, drive out from under trailer to hang tractor chains

TruckerJo - I think you are a tad too narrow in your view. I would suggest you simply remove "rich" and you'll be fine. Remember, something like 80% of all SUVs are driven by soccer moms with ZERO training, and no concept of the fact that "4 wheel drive does not mean 4 wheel stop"

( A couple years ago, I used my Lincoln Continental to pull some 7 4X4 vehicles out of the ditch on my way home during a blizard.)
