It looks like someone took divot with a 9 iron out of this tire. It must have been on the bottom of the tire when I did our pretrip because I didn’t see it until our first stop. I put in a DVIR but we drove it. Why? the divot wasnt past the surface rubber, all other trailer tires were stellar and our loads were light.
When we got back I think they replaced it.

Just because it worked doesn’t mean I was right. Would you have had it replaced midtrip?

    Kyle G. Thanks this.

    I wouldn't have had it replaced mid-trip.

Nothing unsafe about that. Tread chunking. Happened from scrubbing on rough surface or railroad crossing in a tight turn. Only need to worry about it if the tread blocks pulled out at the under tread layer.

No, I wouldn’t replace that tire until it gets worn down more.-As far as I can tell from the pic. As it gets closer to summer fast speed and hot roads will accelerate the damage. Ground spots will grow. Until about June and as long it don’t see metal, I’d use it on the trailer.

Replace the tire as soon as you can. you get any inspection, the cop won't care what anyone thinks on a forum, he will ding you with an OOS until it is replaced. Beleive me I know.

    Nahbrown and lual Thank this.

if you can see metal (cords) through the rubber it's OOS, if you can't see metal you're good to roll. but if you can't see metal though that hole, a hole that deep has like 2 mm of rubber left before metal, so you're good for how long before it cracks open or chunks out deeper...

that's not a safety dangerous tire, just inspection dangerous

    Hatt91 and Arctic_fox Thank this.

Yes, it's a good idea to get it replaced, especially if you run either Tennessee or California; those states would put you OOS in a heartbeat! Imagine having to have that tire replaced at the Caltrans scale in Truckee, CA? I wouldn't want to find out just how much they charge for a tire call up there!
