Immaterial. You could wreck the chain once in a while but for the occasional once every few years use for me I don't even think about it.

I don't remember what they were. I'll ask the mechanics tomorrow and see if they know. They had a big plastic fruit bin full of torn up sox out behind the shop that winter.

Tire socks are also good for drivers who just need to carry chains to comply with the laws, but do not intend to put on chains. I worked for a company where almost all of the fleet did not put on chains. We were not allowed. We were only allowed to carry them. They had a “chain gang” in the northwest that handled those loads.TallJoe Thanks this.
