    the regulation regarding tread depth.

let's suppose a tire has chunks of the gripping stuff missing about quarter sized pieces missing with 0 tread depth within that quarter sized surface area.

is this violation of the regulation regarding tread depth?

i don't care about opinions of "you should be fine" or things like that. i wanna hear what the regulation says about that. it mentions tread depth but what about surface area? i was under the impression that even if it's a small surface area if there is 0 tread depth then it's a violation.

so. do these tires violate the regulation or not?

Any major tread that is less then 2/32 4/32 on the front fail no matter how small the spot is......( I don’t think micro sipes count)

You might want to pick you battles on thus one tho.....

so are you saying this tire is violating that tread depth regulation? 'any' tread depth below that threshold?

§393.75 details the "minimum" to avoid tickets or warnings. OOS gives a little more wiggle room. For example, less than 2/32" tread (4/32" on a steer) at ANY point along a major tread groove (not including wear bars) is good for a ticket or warning, but unless you're 1/2 that measurement on 2 adjacent tread grooves, you're not going to be OOS. As for missing chunks of tread, that's spelled out in the OOS criteria as well:

It probably falls to officer discretion.

Sounds like you need to pay closer attention during your pre/post trips and in route inspections. How much air pressure do you keep in your drive or steer tires?

§373.75(a)(2) prohibits "any" tread or sidewall separation...but OOS requires 75% of the tread width or 12" chunk along the circumference of the tire.

OOS has very specific requirements...and the defect either meets them or it doesn't. If it does, you'll be put OOS. If not, it's up to the officer whether to issue a warning or citation.

If you want to know what the regulation says read it do not ask other people about it.
