Do you honestly expect to make more than 40k a year in your first few years as a trucker? You're a fool if you do. Student drivers aren't worth that much money.

Thank you. I am a student, I'm just starting. I don't have a lot of experience and I know that. I know someone without experience isn't going to be favorable

It's no different from any other industry. Entry level work never pays well. You wouldn't pay a laborer the same as a foreman, would you?

I agree. My dads been at a paper mill for almost 30 years now. Back when he started he made minimum wage. Now he's well above it. It takes experience and time. I know that.

You have the right track of mind to succeed in the industry.

For those that still wanna complain I have news for you: The US department of labor does not consider driving a truck as a profession. You made the decision to get a CDL. You made the decision to drive OTR. You made the decision to drive for a bottom feeder. Stop blaming everyone else for your decisions, and stop comparing apples to oranges. Big brother isn't going to stick up for you.

I guess we are arguing afferent points. After 20 years of fighting this fight I guess its all about the money for me at this point. I have realized a few simple realities in the last few years. To begin with very few drivers or owners can make enough money to put a couple kids through college, buy a fishing boat and retire at 62.
That said, if your goal is to own a truck I believe you can, will, and should. I just hope that the 21 years olds reading this who think they are about to luck into some 70K cushy career understand that most of us are struggling to feed our families.

The other variable in our discussion is geography. I live in a middle-upper income neighborhood with a $2,200 mortgage, pretty average for a Phoenix suburb. So 50K per year to someone in southern Missouri with a single-wide on grandpas land is a lot different than 50K to someone living in New York City.

You're point is solely based on OTR. While you did bring up some good arguments, there's more to the industry than driving 3000 miles a week for peanuts. OTR should NOT be based on cost of living. That would not just bankrupt the industry, but also kill the economy. It would also create problems with unions. If you have 2 student truckers, one from NYC and the other from Kansas working for the same bottom feeder at the same experience level, unions would have a field day if they weren't paid the same. That's considered discrimination.

I wouldn't trade my daycab for anything. I work 8 hours a day, 5 days a week and get paid 60k a year plus benefits to do it.

theres an error in your burger flipper hours worked example. Unless you are union, ot doesnt begin til 40 hrs have been reached for the week. AFTER that is accomplished , you MAY see the hours to get time and a half. Not , as you stated, after 8 for the day.

There's an error in your example too. Depends on the company. I have worked for both. And was only totally sold out by the Teamsters. There are more good non union companies out here then good union companies. Good union companies are few and far between these days.
