My ex went to USX a month after getting his CDL and trained on and then got an auto. He never learned to shift except for school and to me that was a huge mistake! IF he never really learned how to drive a stick and ''learned'' on an automatic -what would happened if he had to switch out and all that was left was a stick or if he was going to go to another company? (Not that it matters now he was fired after 5 months and is not driving-you should all be glad he was scary.....)

I learned to drive a car in a stick and to me I learned much better control of the vehicle as I learned by my RPMs and the engine sounds when I needed to shift and I got much better control!

I think you should learn on the stick and then if needed, say you have a bum knee (happens) then there is at least an option!
But you have to learn the basics of your vehicle!!!

And I gave him reasons for the need to learn how to shift manually....maybe you didn't read the entire thread before criticizing or finding fault in a post.

You assumed to know all of Pete's experience, I rebutted your statement with a comparison of my experience to my years of driving (as a professional/for a living). There was also a post Pete was responding to regarding a comparison to being "manly" with respect to the transmission operated....and Pete was correct, the tranny doesn't make a driver any more or less a driver...it is experience that makes a driver as good or as "want to be good" that he/she is. Only experience will effect that outcome. Yes, I comprehend most everything I enter into a discussion about...and if I don't understand, I am not afraid to ask what others would consider "a dumb question"!

Who really cares? I like a manual but have no qualms with someone wanting an automatic. My dad's been driving for 32 years and wants an automatic because he's liked the ones he's driven from time to time. Would some of you think he doesn't know what he's doing too? I talk crap to him about it but that's due to a father/son same career thing in which I'm obligated to talk crap to the old man about everything driving related.

He is a student... If he wants to drive an auto.. great.. He needs to learn on a manual first.. auto will not always be an option.
