There's good and bad about Auto transmission. One is if you loose the clutch in the auto it's done but in a stick you can float to get home. Second you have more control of your gear selection especially on iced up,snowed pack, wet roads and ascending and descending grades. I have 3 years of CDL driving under me ( 2 years class B and 1 year Class A) and in my opinion I would stay with a stick. Also here's one thing most companies asked if you driven a auto or manual from your previous employers so you might want to consider staying with the stick for that reason. They will hire a person driven a stick before one that driven a automatic.

Why someone would want to limit themselves right out of the gate seems backwards to me. Anyone that's been around for a while knows you gain as much experience on all different types of equipment to make your career better. Going this way you just may cut yourself right out of that dream job. It's getting to where the job application is going to say will only drive KW's, need auto, and big un-governed HP. Must do 75mph and need to be home on weekends. I wonder what Yahoo is painting that picture? Maybe drivers with less than 5 years?

Actually he doesn't need to. Is it a good idea? I don't think so, but he doesn't NEED to learn on a manual. Like I said, let people go their own route. If he screws himself in the end there is no one else to blame.

I learned on Manual, then went to auto for about 5 months. My company (PAM) had autos but are now phasing them out. I enjoyed having an auto because when I got upgraded to a manual truck I knew how to better control and operate my truck better. The downside to having auto is that when back up at a dock it's either hit or miss, with manual I just shift into reverse and let my foot of the brake and clutch and let it roll in. With auto transmissions you can manually override if you got hilly terrain or just like if you have it on the highway.

Just paid $20k to repair an auto.
Just sent a mechanic 1500 miles to spend 5 min disable the PTO signal wire (Truck has no PTO) because computer says PTO is engaged so auto wont select gears.
One of the main reasons I like autos is because the good ones make all drivers shift like pros.
If I could get drivers who shifted like pros and understood how to drive economically then I would not use autos because of the added complexity.

I not event a Trucker for NOW but I definitely think that a auto sucks.
There is nothing better than a Eaton fuller 18 speed transmission
