This is what i have said a number of times there is no reason with a ham license only a 35 question test to change CB rules.
-
Well times have greatly changed since the rule was implimented. That was back in the old days were simple breathing would disrupt the airwaves etc. This is not so any more, we do not hand crank cars to start them anymore. There is no reason why the FCC can not left the standards a little so that CB radios can advance with the times. It used to be that daily driver cars only put out 130HP but that is not true anymore. It used to be that cell phones were all anolog but that is not true any more. It used to be that we had to have rabbit ears on our TVs to watch them but again that has changed. It used to be that cordless phones could be picked on on an AM radio but that has also changed.
Maybe the Gov should mandate that Each and every person drive a Geo metro and that no one can own or operate anything with more.
People these days, want more umph and features. The "legal" CB radios, that are put out these days, do not give people that they want. They look to a package that will give them what they want. Which means, more sales of 10 meter radios with the band selector on them.
If the FCC would allow more power then the manufacturers could produce radios with the power that people want and they would not have the band selector on them which means that they would not accidentally get on to the 10 meter frequencies and in the way of the ham operators etc.
The 4 watt 12 pep does not cut it any more. I can easily do double the distance with my 4300HP over a 4 watt 12 pep radio. And I could careless about the band knob on it. Don't use it. It has a 10k switch on it also that never gets used. Heck I have never turn the knobs on for the eco and reverb.
I don't shoot skip either, well not on purpose. was running in southern Manitoba when someone came over the radio and asked were I was. he was down in Texas and said it sounded like I was sitting next to him. But the conditions there for it that day. -
There is no reason why the FCC can not left the standards a little so that CB radios can advance with the times I agree and think a proposal of rule making for digital should be done. Power is not needed with digital.
People these days, want more umph and features. The "legal" CB radios, that are put out these days, do not give people that they want. Then why do you oppose me driving a truck without a license ?
If the FCC would allow more power then the manufacturers could produce radios with the power that people want And how much power do you want ?
AGAIN if you want more taks a 35 question test ...... -
Tell me, what a 35 question test, will do for me on the 11 meter band? I have no need for any of the other bands then the 11 meter section. Everyone I know runs 11 meter (CB) and do not run any other equipment.
-
The rules for 11 meters are 4 watts. Just because you can buy a bigger (but not legal) radio doesn't change things. Time to switch to analogy mode: If you can afford a top fuel dragster, does that make it OK to do 300MPH in a school zone? Got the latest super duper crotch rocket motorcycle, does that make it OK to go 200+MPH on the freeway? Nope in both cases. If you want to go faster, go to the race track, or get a pilot's license. Want to talk on the radio with more power or longer distances? Get a Amatuer license. If you are not happy with the rules for 11 meters, file for a rules change with the FCC to change them.
The nice think about ham trolling is that I never have to use any bait, they always bite on the bare hook!squirrellsgnwild Thanks this. -
Tell me, what harm is being done by running 40,50 or even 100 watts on a clean radio on the 11 meter band? I am not going to take out a school kid with my radio or take out grandma on the highway with 100 watts of radio power. Heck with the new digital age, I am not even interfering with peoples TVs or cordless phones etc.
Compairing apples to oranges here.
Again, I have no need to use anything more then a CB because the people I talk to only use a CB in their trucks. -
ALL true! WHY do the authorities not lift the power requirements?
Answers:
1 UNNECESSARY INTERFERENCE
2. THE LACK OF TRAINING BY OPERATORS. THEY ALSO KNOW THAT *IF* POWER WERE INCREASED, THE "BIG OPERATORS" WOULD NOT HONOR IT. IF IT WERE 50 WATTS, THE CBERS (WELL, NOT ALL OF THEM) WOULD RUN 100. IF IT WERE 100, THEY'D RUN 500. IF IT WERE-----WELL, YOU GET THE IDEA.
3. IT IS ABSOLUTELY NOT NEEDED.
4. CB RADIO IS, AND ALWAYS HAS BEEN, A CONSUMER APPLIANCE, AND AS SUCH HAS BEEN SUPPLANTED BY CELLPHONES, COMPUTERS, EMAIL AND FAX. SO FAR AS THE PUBLIC IS CONCERNED, IT IS A FAD WHOSE TIME HAS PAST.
What drivers don't realize, is 4 watts IS enough------IF they complied with the rules. How many drivers run 500 watts to talk to the truck RIGHT IN FRONT of THEM? FAR too many. The noise, hash, and trash that the drivers complain about (and other CB users, too) IS THEIR OWN FAULT!! The plain fact is, they don't know what they are doing!!! That's simply the truth! With all that extra power that *some* CBers run, it makes the distance they can cover LESS, not more because it just adds to the racket---the squeals and howls you hear from OTHER CB operators doing the SAME wrong thing they are! THAT is why CB radio will NEVER get any more of anything: power, 'channels', zip! The CB "service" can't manage what it HAS now because of lack of training, lack of understanding of how, when, where, and why (or not) to use additional power. WHY do you need to talk 50 miles anyway? There's plenty of trucks right adjacent to you.
CB radio is intended (and always will be) to be a short-distance, economical, radio service for the public. Most of the general public has abandoned CB for more modern and more useful technologies. Amateur radio is the ONLY "hobby" radio service that is legally permitted although the Fed has grudgingly allowed CB to engage in "hobby"-type communications. But it will NEVER permit "extra channels" or more power in the hands of the unknowing public. If they DID, it wouldn't solve ANYTHING, and FCC KNOWS it! You'd just have the same racket (howls and squeals and noise) only WORSE. More power would only call for MORE. More "channels" would just want MORE. The key is for CB folks to recognize a problem and ORGANIZE/FIX what you already have. Learn to use what we got EFFECTIVELY! Stop trying to talk OVER each other as if it were some test of one's manhood (it's stupid and immature!) Stop twisting and turning "pots" to "git more of them watts" and mo' channels. Stop running over-modulated and horrible-sounding radios with 300% modulation (it sounds like CRAP!) Stop trying to work stations 100 miles away; you are creating your OWN interference and problems by acting as *I* am the ONLY station in the world that should be on the air right now.
I know, I know...........folks won't want to hear that! But it is the absolute truth, and if everybody would use LEGAL, 40 channel CB radios, quit modifying them to do things they are not supposed to do, exercise courtesy and restraint on the air, you'd find out just how much 4 watts could do!
As I said, CB was (is) designed to be a short-ranged, cheap, and personal radio solution. Amateur radio is the ONLY legal "hobby" radio in the USA. It is where one is permitted to "shoot skip", run additional power (most of which is not needed and, yes, the hams themselves have their own power "freaks" that think *they* should be the only loud stations on the air. (They CAN get into trouble for it, too---even for using power when it is not needed!) If you WANT those additional privileges (and they ARE a privilege, not a "right"), then sit for the amateur exam.
Your truck can become an "office" from which you can work the world, get an education about radio, make many friends everywhere, and make those long runs seem shorter as you "ride" along with friends you made everywhere. Once you get INTO ham radio, you will, perhaps, understand why hams so jealously guard against "them extra channel" fellas who invade their turf!
Maybe this will help.

Gadfly, ever been to North Dakota? Just wondering, because we do not have the CB traffic here that you see around the big metro areas. Heck even around Fargo, Grand Forks and Bismark there is little to no traffic on 11 meter. As far as talking to the truck directly infront of me. Well I could get by with a handheld for that. I talk with other drivers that drive for the same company. We are more then 15 to 30 mins apart. The best I have done with a stock over the counter radio, is 8 miles. Not good enough. We don't have the background or white noise to deal with so our radios are pretty quiet even with the gain and squelch cranked. The comunications at these distances were hardly audible in a loud noisy truck. As far as cell phones, that would be great but cell towers are far and few between in the areas we run. Meaning no service.
See, we (other drivers in the company and myself) run a pretty dedicated route. All of us,about 30, load in the same area in Manitoba and haul product down to south central North Dakota to be unloaded. We don't run huge power. I am running more then the others at 75 watts carrier with 135 watts pep. When we all make the return trip back to Manitoba then we are all together Well usually groups of 5 or 6, we turn the power down a bit as it is not needed when we are running in tighter groups. We do not run the regular truckers channel when we are in a group. We have three channels we run that are not well used by other truckers that might be in the area. When we are spread out then we run 19 (our hailing channel) and switch for longer comunications. Usually go to the "Farm" "Coffee Room" or the "Break Room" All three are different channels.
Like I have said, I could careless about talking 100+ miles or across the world. Have I shot skip? Well not on purpose. It was kind of cool that I talked to a guy over 800 miles away. Just said hello and told him were I was at and left it at that.
I understand the giving and inch and taking a miles deal. We have people like that in everything we do, but to hold others back because of the very few is not the correct way of doing things.
Do I have the ability to run even more power? Sure I do. I have a 500+ watt amp "footwarmer"LOL sitting in my garage collecting dust. Why don't I use it? Well I could and others in my group could hear me even farther away but since they are not running that much power then I would not beable to hear them well enough for clean comunication. Kind of useless unless they do it also.
I ran over the road for a few years with a properly tuned cobra 29. It did what it was intended to do and I was happy. It was not until I started doing what I am doing now that the need for more umph came about.
It was the difference between grossing 100,000 lbs with a 350 Hp truck and doing the same with a 525 hp truck. Sure the 350 hp truck will get the job done but not as eficiantly and effectivly as the as the 525 hp truck.
Or like running down the freeway at 70 (or what ever the speedlimit is). Sure a 95hp car could do it but you would be running at its limits for a long time. Would be better off in a car with more power to keep you rolling, especially if you encounter some hills.
