Prior to coming to the oilfield in N.D., which I have been driving in for a year now, I drove a log truck locally back home in Mississippi. I've grown tired of the oilfield, being away from home so much, and the brutal winter that's setting in. My problem is I'm looking for different work, preferably something local at home, but all the companies I've contacted wont accept my logging or oilfield experiance. I've been driving for three years and both logging and especially oilfield driving is some of the most demanding driving there is, requiring skill and endurance. Even the few OTR companies I've contacted give me the same crazy lines. I don't want to go Road Warrior with some bottom feeder just to get multi-state experiance. That would just defeat the purpose of me wanting more home time and I might as well stay in the oilfield than do that. Can any of you guys give me some good advice on how to overcome this and land a good catch with a local or dedicated run that will get me home at least on the weekends. Thanks in advance for your help.

You are fighting an up hill battle. Most people don't like OTR so those who have the experience are getting the jobs you want. Local jobs are hard to come by even when you have the experience. So the only thing I can tell you. Continue in the oil field. Save your money and then find a non truck driving job to keep you home. There are those companies like Coke and Beer companies who probably won't care about OTR experience. Just have to be able to unload all those cases on a hand truck or even if you get the big truck runs. You can deal with unloading and counting the cases at the stores and trying to put them out of the way in over stocked receiving areas. Just thinking of that makes me thankful for my otr job.

You can also try the food service places like Sysco, US Food, Etc. Or just keep on putting in apps locally but since most of these companies have insurance guidelines for recent otr experience. You could be just wasting your time.

Tough spot you're in; worst case would be a CDL school paid for by WIA.
Have you tried the online application with Total Transportation or KLLM out of MS? If not, do it an see what happens.
Check Careerbuilder and Craigslist. Try the food service companies such as grocery warehouses & companies like U.S. Food Service. Greatwide has some contracts with food warehouses and hires company drivers. Check Panther Expedite. If you're pulling a tanker look (Google) for fuel haulers in MS. Another good place to check are cement companies. Drybulk tankers deliver the dry bulk cement powder to the ready mix companies. You may get on with a ready mix company and just use that for a stepping stone to something better. Hope this helps.

@Chinatown: Thanks! Don't know why but hadn't even thought about the fuel haulers.

Good...lots of tanker work of different types in MS. I've hauled many loads of acid to MS refineries & other plants that use chemicals.
Those online apps are better than a phone call; it gives them something to look at; there's real person at the other end who submitted the application.

    SaintBully Thanks this.

That helps to eliminate some of the spammers who only sign up to spam through PM's. Until you get to seven posts, you can PM any of the moderators and they'll help you get it done.
