No that is not normal in Pa, I am orginally from there. All he has to do is fill in your information as the purchaser on the back of the title and it releases him from any issues later with regards to the title. Be sure to have his signature notarized on the Pa title, Pa requires this and if you are with him the notary will want to see your ID as well. You should get the title, a bill of sale, and a form from the DMV declaring the sale price. You do not want the title reissued in Pa unless you are going to register it in Pa otherwise you will have to pay the transfer fee and sales tax then try to get the tax credit in your home state.

Brian is correct. I live in Pa. If a buyer and seller both reside in the state, then you must transfer the title with the seller and buyer present.

If you are an out of state buyer, proceed exactly as Brian said. You need the seller's signature notarized so that you can register it in your home state.

Are you planning on driving the vehicle back or are you towing it?

I would call the local notary where this individual lives. Call HIS notary if he has one that he uses. They will explain everything that is needed. Then explain it to him, or better yet, let them explain it to him. Sounds like he's confused.

I hate to see a good deal get away... Good luck.

If he's afraid you won't get the truck transferred into your name, he should make copies of the front and back of the title. I am a registered auto dealer here in NC. If people pay cash I usually give them the title and let them go to the DMV. I always make copies of the fully filled out and Notorized title, along with copies of every other piece of paper. I don't have to keep copies of the title, but if there is ever any question about anything I have full proof of transfer.

Just thinking out loud...... what this seller doesn't get ( while trying to cover his own arse ) is my money is green. It spends just as good in CA as PA and he doesn't have "the only" truck for sale. By openly distrusting me before having any reason to makes me suspicious of him, wondering what he's hiding. But ok, we'll give him a little more rope and see what he does with it.

Thanks gentlemen, I'll letcha know what happens.

The notaries are private businesses and charge a wide range of fees, typically anywhere from $10 and up, $30 is a little high but not out of line if they are also a tag agent and will do the other transfer paperwork.

If you need or want someone to go inspect the truck for you I have a lot of friends throughout the state of Pennsylvania that are state certified inspection mechanics and could make arrangements to have one of them look at it for you, of course they will want a fee but I am just putting it out there for you.

$30.00 sounds ok if they are just going to notarize the seller's name on the title. It is best to call the notary, as they can give you an exact price.

Also, in Pa, most notaries only work with cars and pickups. They can transfer ownership, notarize, etc, any vehicle, but most are not knowledgable regarding class 8 trucks. There are other notaries that handle apportioned tags. They deal with rigs everyday and know what is needed to the letter. Hope this helps.

If we get close enough to a deal I'll drop you a line. He's in Alexandria and it would be worth the price to have a local guy check by before I fly up there.

    Thanks

i have never paid more than ten bucks for a notary. and i use one everything i buy or sell land. But i have never bought a truck either, so maybe 30 is not robbery. From reading the post, i'd prob. walk away if seller is difficult... Money talks, cagada walks
