I've been looking into driving for TMC after graduating from my training program. I definitely want to drive flatbed, and from what I've read here on TTR the training at TMC is top notch.
Now I've noticed that TMC as well as quite a few other flatbed companies advertise that they offer weekends off and deliver most of their freight east of the Mississipi. I've got no attachments and don't mind being away from home for long stretches so I'd be staying out weeks, maybe even months at a time. I'm wondering how often I'll get sent out west. On their website they say they deliver to all 48 states. How are those loads going into or out of the western 11? And if I let my FM know I'm interested what are my chances of picking some of those loads up?
It's not a deal breaker for me, but I really enjoy that part of the country. I've also got some college buddies out that way (New Mexico and Los Angeles specifically) who it'd be nice to stop and catch up with.
TMC and long hauls

I appreciate the reply, but it says right in that blurb you posted that they only hire experienced drivers - not students. I've been doing a lot of research here on TTR and elsewhere about different companies and I've already got a narrowed down list (unfortunately I am well outside most western carriers hiring area) of companies I'm interested in. I just haven't seen anyone go into much detail here in the TMC forum about the company's long hauls. When I read threads from a couple of years ago I notice people talking about a long haul division, but it looks like they got rid of that. My main question is if those loads are available at TMC and the frequency with which I could take them if I so desired. Thanks in advance for any answers.

they go all out west as well, just let your fm know to run you and he will, but beware what you ask for becouse once he gets used to running you it will be hard to get him to slow down later.

something also to consider. Tmc (at this time) does not use apus or bunk heaters-while you can idle the truck, they really wish you wouldnt (varies FM to FM). That can make your time out rather crappy if your wanting to stay out
-
All the new trucks have bunk heaters.

I told my one fm if your gonna keep me in upstate ny, vt, ma, ect in the winter, I'm gonna idld. Needless.to say I went back to owens corning dedicated soon after and slept at home most nights.

TMC does go west, but the problem is there aren't many loads coming back. This could lead to some sitting. I wouldn't call it a deal breaker though. Just make sure that when your FM gives you a load going to the west coast especially, he has a load coming back.
I went west quite a few times and did exactly this. I once scored a load out of Washington that was a two stop Florida load. Nice 3 - 4 day run. Loved those.
As far a the boat division, if you have a passcard or passport, you will be in Canada a lot. I did this and loved it too. Keep in mind that you will have to pay your dues in linehaul to get experience a while (1-2 years) before they will allow you to go to boats and even then, it depends on where you live.
Good luck!
