I am getting ready to start drivers school here in Kentucky. I started out talking to the C 1 truck Drivers Training based out of Indy. There are three company's that will sponsor you through this school, PAM, AVERITT, US Trucks. The tuition was $5000. with the company paying all but $1000. in which they do a pay roll deduction for one year until its paid. You are also in a contract with the company of your choice for one (1) year.

I started checking all the school around me locally "Lexington, Kentucky" and found that just about all had closed down. I finally located one in Mount Sterling Kentucky and was surprised when they told me their tuition of $2500.00. The school gives all the hours required by all the companys and I am not in any contract. I also saved myself some money "$300.00" by getting my permit prior to attending school.

The school is really pushing TMC as one of the best company's to work for. I was also told that they are very selective on who they chose. I narrowed my search down to two company's TMC and ROELH. I liked the home time ROELH offers with the option of 7 days on the road then 4 days home, then back out for 7 and home for 3. They also have a 7 days out and 7 home. The company TMC offers weekends at home but the pay is supposed to be quite a bit better.

I have been finding myself reading this board and questioning the school recruiter about the company's and finally decided that TMC will be the best choice. I have been communicating with PHIL at TMC in which has been very helpful with answering questions and what to expect in general. The company has completed their background and everything required and most recently faxed me an offer stating I was 100 % hired. I am starting to look foward to my second career in Trucking as I was an officer for 21 years for the state of Kentucky. Since, I have been working as Safety/Security Manager for the Marriott Griffin Gate Hotel, and this Friday is the end of my two week notice.

The anticipation is starting to sink in with all the questions about orientation in Des Moines IA. I understand by reading the forum they are very strict and some has compared to military. I will be sure and stay off the grass when I arrive! I am curious why so many drop out of the classes, does anyone know if the tests are getting people by not passing? or are there any written tests at the school along with practical skills? I admitt the one thing I will be glad that is over with will be my time with a trainer. I have read some bad stories about some experiences with trainers. I may get lucky and find a trainer close to my home here in Lexington, KY. I see several TMC trucks running the interstate as I reside very close to the I 75 - I 64 split.

If anyone has some advise or answers to some of the questions above I would appreciate the info.

    Thanks,

    Rob aka "Hammer"

When you work more you earn more. If you want to take one week off out of three you will not earn as much of course. In your area you will get home almost every weekend unless you chose to take a longer run.

There are a few people who do not pass the tests. They are not hard and are mostly similar to the tests you took when getting your CDL permit. With those they are just making sure you didn't buy your CDL without learning anything. There is also a math test to see if you have the skills necessary to operate a logbook using simple addition and subtraction. Some people also leave orientation due to expired paperwork, such as one guy in my orientation that arrived with a drivers license that had expired three months ago. He was welcome to return once he had that fixed. Orientation is also designed to tick off people with short tempers because shippers and receivers will also tick off these same people and TMC wants stable mentally balanced people behind the wheel, not someone who will get mad at a customer and lose that customer. Some people get scared of the actual load securement or discouraged by the actual work involved. There are also people who simply cannot operate a truck going forward or backward.

You should have good luck finding a nearby trainer. Sometimes you will not click with a trainer but my attitude was to be agreeable to the trainer. I didn't argue about most things because I could do what I wanted once I got to my own truck. People who pick fights with their trainer may actually be looking for a reason to quit I think. Good luck.

Wow, TMC is getting some good press on these boards. Can't wait to see how all of this shakes out. Good luck Rob and Supraman, maybe I'll see one of you in Des Moines.

I decited on Roehl. I have an offer letter from them as well. I start Jan 12th. A couple days of orintation then Im out with a trainer. I spoke to TMC as well, just didnt seem like a fit for me. They sound like a fine company to work for, just not for me. I chose Roehl for a couple reasons. I'll do all the driving with the trainer. The trainer and I will sleep, eat and drink at the same time. No one driver will sleep while the other drives, I like that idea of training. I also felt there would be more oppertunities with Rohel as I live 40 mins fron I87, I90 and I84 in NY. I hoping down the road I can get a deticated or regional run. Well, good luck to all of us, hopefully we get what we're looking for.

One of the reasons I decided to sign on with TMC too. Lots of positive things to be said about them. I know there some bad things but every company or job has certain amount of BS to deal with.

I called the recruiter yesterday and hoping he returns my phone call ( Ileft a message on voicemail), I don't know how much I should bug him, lol. I realize though with Thanksgiving coming up that maybe not this week.

Good luck also all those too. and happy holiday.

How are you and the trainer getting along? Is it hard spending all that time so close together, like sleeping in the truck and non training things. I often wondered how teams do it, especially if they don't know each other well.
