Working on my Christmas list for momma at home and am in need of a good gps unit. We have Garmins in our personal cars and am thrilled with them both albeit sometimes a bit slow bringing up route. So my first thought was a Garmin 560DZL, but I would want the new 7" version which is available at the end of the year. But I am hearing things about the Rand-McNally TND 720 which make me question whether that is the way to go. I understand in both brands that the 5" and 7" versions are the same except for screen size. I have large hands and I believe the larger screen will be easier to use while driving. I could use some real world opinions on the both of them. Thoughts??
tnd 520 720 versus garmin 560dzl and 760dzl

make sure that whatever you buy is capable of beginning a trip at any address in the database, not just wherever you happen to be parked. the old rand mcnallys couldn't do that. a pcmiler unit will allow you to trip plan from any city to any city, no matter where you happen to be at the moment.
also, the old randmcnallys would never show you the whole trip, just from current location to the end of that leg. that was inconvenient if you wanted to look over the whole trip to decide where to spend the night, for instance.
big buttons are a plus. the old pcmilers were terrible for that, but garmins and rands seem to have figured it out.
on the rands, check out the back button. the 510 and 710s changed the location of the back button on every screen, so you had to search for it if you wanted to go back three or four screens at a time. -
No such model - TND-520.

Actually, I had an odd thing happen this trip with my 500 (I won't get home until later this week to pick up my 720). I was running from SC to MI, and normally the unit would route me up 77 to 64, then onto US35 (the new parts don't show up on my unit, but that's not the problem). Anyway, I could not get it to even acknowledge US35 existed until actually getting on the road itself. It would route me up 79 to Parkersburg, WV, then up to 70, then west. I'd detour numerous times, and it just wouldn't admit that 35 even existed, though it's had no problems in the past.
I just thought it was strange. For me, a non-issue. But it was nice to see my miles to my destination fall from like 540 to 420-something!Mark Kling Thanks this. -
As GPS units go. I have to go with Garmin.
I have a Dezel 560. It works great. Has some nice tools.
Have not had any problems from them.
The LMT units include Lifetime Traffic AND Map updates.
I have been waiting on the 7" version to come out and see what it looks like.
Thats a really BIG screen to have sitting out there.
