IMG_3385.jpeg Snow day! We got about 6 inches and it’s still comin down. Then 40 mph winds and dropping temps into the teens. @Trashtrucker1707 if you want to talk about a possible residence swap, I’m all ears!

Howdy folks! I’ve been reading through some of this thread and have learned a LOT about end dumping and avoiding laying it over, etc. so thank you all for sharing your experience! I’m in central Kansas and looking to start O/O with a small local end dump operation very soon (within a month?) if everything works out . I think mostly sand and rock, and some dirt. I’m looking for a trailer on a limited budget, since I spent most of my savings on the truck (Older Pete COE). A few questions I have: what’s the best trailer for local sand, rock, dirt? Im thinking aluminum, frameless, spread axle (that’s kinda what the new potential boss recommended).

I don’t think I’d need a very big trailer for now, but Im thinking of getting a bigger one (up to 40 ft?) so I have more options in the future. Or is that a bad idea- will a long trailer just be more of a pain/ risk of tipping in the wind?

I was hoping to find a place to rent or lease from to get started, or maybe a lease purchase agreement, but haven’t found a good place for that so far. If anyone could point me in the right direction I’d appreciate it greatly! I know a few of you aren’t too far from my area.

Thanks for looking, and I’m happy for any help and tips you guys (and girl) can offer me!

Welcome! Wow a COE Pete! I drove one or two of those back in the day. It's a smart way to get your foot in the door since they are somewhat more economical on the budget. There are companies that do lease trailers, they aren't cheap but that gives you an opportunity to try different ones until you decide what you want. I've seen these companies in the truck paper, my little salesman etc. I would say to decide what you want to do as far as local regional or OTR. I pull a 40 foot trailer but run local how ever I can go anywhere because of the length which is more than enough for the bridge laws. A COE has normally a shorter wheelbase than a conventional like I run. Keeping this in mind, to run 80K on any interstate you will most likely need a 39 ft trailer. I prefer a spread but my truck is 285 inches long and 22K so I'm 34000 with my current 40 foot trailer. A spread axle is a little bit heavier and has it's pros and cons. Aluminum trailer is what I use hauling aggregates, lime etc. I have a liner in my trailer. I prefer a framelss. Some of the others here like @Trashtrucker1707 hauls a bigger variety of products than I do including scrap as does @motocross25 @YardMule89
I have personally talked to Active trailers and they seem like they are pretty up front about things. I have added links to help you on your search. If I can help let me know. Beelman Trucking also sells trailers directly it would be good to look at their equipment as well.Used Truck & Equipment Sales | Beelman Truck Co Illinois

@NightWind thank you for the quick response and your opinion and recommendations! Don’t know if it changes your answer any, but my trucks wheelbase is right at 200 in if I remember right. Thanks for those links- I had forgotten about rentalyard and it looks more hopeful there than any other place I’ve talked to this week!

No I stand by the 39 foot because of wheel base. I will say it would be a good idea to get an empty weight on your truck full of fuel and your gear so you know what weight you can deal with on a trailer.

For those materials a tub style dump would be nice, little less risk because the material gets out of those trailers quicker from what I’ve seen. You wouldn’t need anything wide or tall walled unless you start thinking about doing agriculture type work, cotton seed and things of this nature that don’t have much weight to them but pay by the ton, you would want a 102 wide with at least 66 inch sides so you can get some volume in there. I have a 102/66 and I can stuff it top to bottom with aluminum turnings and barely gross 66K, granted it’s a flat rate but I’m using it as an example of even at that size, it’s hard to make weight, any smaller trailer the shipper would most likely ask for me to not come back.
