Railroaders have always hated trucks because they couldn't exist without us and will never match the service ....kinda like a jealous sibling lol.
On the other hand imagine highways without rail service ..it would be gridlock everywhere .
The 2 go hand in hand no matter what the railroads say .

I’ve got nothing against railroads, come from a family of railroaders. What bothers me is when a railroader tries to say trucks need to be eliminated.

As far as whether one or the other can survive without the other, I’d say no on the trains & yes on the trucks, though as you pointed out the current road system couldn’t handle the increased traffic.

Then there’s those that say, railroads survived before trucks came to be. True, but back then the predecessor to the truck, horse drawn wagons, was going the last part of the journey in most instances.

Isn't the joke that axle groups are called trucks on trains?

The industry in the USA is working on buried rail tracks. At one point up to the 50's everything is possible by train with trucks in a supporting role. And US mail lasted until the 60's everywhere. Cars killed off the passenger service and trucking pretty much killed off everything except coast to coast bulk trains. Not to mention Coal rules required everyone to get it from Wyoming instead of West Virginia or Eastern PA.

I enjoyed the swoosh photo of the engine without trucks. That's cute.

Two of those with trucks is worth about 8000 HP each, good for a 14000 ton train. That's about 400 containers worth of trucking that is not done from the west coast east. Because it's a priority schedule with highspeed, they will put a third and forth engine on there and really get up and go.

Maybe we should go back to containers by team with three day service to New Jersey instead of crappy 10 day service by train. (Domestic only. Landbridge is 5 days to east coast or Gulf to reload onto ships for Europe. Bypass the Cape Horn off South America and competes with the Panama Canal which is ours anyway.
