The other day coming out of California I had a sensor tell me that there was too much soot in the exhaust and then a few hundred miles later it went off and has not come back on. My Volvo has 380,000 miles on it and I know it is due to get the DPF filter cleaned out but I have talked with other people that say that that doesn’t work very often and you have to replace it anyway with a new one. So should I get a new one or get this one professionally baked and hope for the best? Should I even do anything at all since the light went back off? I just don’t wanna have to worry about it coming back on and possibly getting D rated in the middle of nowhere.

You're at 380k and you've never serviced it? That's bad. You should do it every 200k or so, about $500 if you pull it yourself and take it to someone, which is easy.

You may've killed yours already. Prepare thy wallet.

How difficult are they to get a hold of right now? That would have a lot to do with the decision to me.

Volvo recommended service interval is 400,000 miles.

Yep, they are done with the 18 month maintenance cycle that is done on most of the trucks (not all) this includes shocks and other items that have a short life. It sounds as a waste of money but i go through a lot of sensors and don't need the headache of one more item on the list to replace.

I have a donaldson system installed at the shop I deal with, got a hell of a deal on it, the shop owner in exchange has to do any truck I sent to him for free. Up here I use a shop that has the same system.

Min e was baked and have had no issues with it. Not worth the money to replace it if done on service schedule.

DPF filter should be perfectly cleaned each time the engine make a Regen.
If not - system is not working as good as it should and need to be repaired.
Sensor(s), regen ingector, fuel system malfunction e.t.c.
I think that DPF filter cleaning without fixing the whole system is a fraud!
The filter replacement only will also not help...
