Hi,
Looking for all the advice I can get on a carreer change. I decided to take the exit from the Marines this month due to fighting going on all over, three kids and a wife to take care of and need to be safe to do so. I am thinking about starting a carreer in trucking since it seems there will always be truckers out there. Dont see it going away anytime soon...just maybe slumps til the market catches back up. I am not opposed to going OTR, at least not for the first year, but really want to be home alot for the kids. Missed out enough on the family these past few years. If I take the ramp into trucking I would do a private school so as no strings attached holding me in case I need to change jobs, ect. Also, could use my veterans benefits to become owner operator if that would be a wise decision, just dont know enough to make a call like that. Trying to get a lot of homework done before I make the decision.
To be or not to be.....

Best advise without seeming like a downer.
Read as much of this forum as possible over the next week or two.
Every post has merit, and the majority are fact. Even though many read like a whiners convention, they're equally true.shriner75 and kickin chicken Thank this. -
You do understand that truck driving loses over 1,000 people a year to dying right? It's not as safe as you'd think.
It's a deadly job, with high risks. -
You only think people wanna hurt you now.... wait'll you get behind the wheels of an 18-wheeler. An you can't shoot back at em either.
Hope you stay safe and make it alright. But do not think about O/O for at least 5 years after you start driving. -
Hello Dean and Welcome to the Forum
Check with your local schools and see who is hiring in your area. I have found that if you do have a good MVR and background that the local vendors will accept you upon graduation.
I will send you a pm with some other info.
Best of Luck to you and Your Success!!! -
Hey deancs, my brother in law is former service. He took all his shiny security clearances and went to work for something he can't talk about.
And he makes about 3x what I make OTR.
Check out defense contractors, security firms, government jobs with clearance requirements, probably gonna be much better off than you'd be trucking.
