Eaton autoshit 10 speed. When it wears out, like all trannies do eventually, do I buy a new one and trade in the old as a core, or is it cost effective to rebuild the old one? Anybody have any real world experience with this?

Depends how much time you have. A good gear shop can rebuild yours if you have the down time to spare.

I wouldn't get a reman from no one but Eaton. Then it's just a re and re bam your done.

Use the Auto-tragic transmission as a garden ornament and install a 13 speed manual transmission instead.

I don't think you are allowed to call them trannies anymore.

If this was thirty years ago I would say take it to the local transmission shop and rebuild it... Today, get a factory reman with the warranty and do the core swap.

How many miles on the transmission? Just curious, as they are nothing more than a manual transmission as far as build with a bunch of servos and electronics. I would think they would outlast a normal manual unit by quite a bit, like double the life. The electronics are going to fail, but the actual transmission should go quite the distance unless seriously abused. Just wondering...

autoshift has hydraulically actuated clutch, that thing will last 20 years, it rev matches and floats everything perfectly. how would you wear out a transmission that never grinds or misses? just change the fluid and get the clutch worked on if it wears down, and maybe the gear selector servos.

BINGO! The reason I asked what was wrong with the transmission that it would need to be rebuilt. Am I off base in my above question or comment? It seems to me the transmission in this state, should outlive the tractor unless seriously abused.

Let me be clear. The tranny still works just fine. It is making a loud clunking noise during shifting in the lower gears. This has me concerned. It also lunges forward when I shift from N to D. This also has me concerned. It’s got 800k miles on it, so it’s not new anymore. It will fail eventually and I want to have a course of action planned out when the time comes.

A buddy of mine has one of these auto transmissions, his was clunking too, it was the control module block on the driver side of the transmission that failed. Around the same mileage. I doubt it is your transmission, more than likely a servo or control that is failing. Most of these electronics are only good for so many years or miles. I would try to find a reputable shop to take it too. If you get to the Atlanta area, run over to Haggai Automotive and Diesel Repair, Jerry can diagnose this and save you from getting raped by a dealer. Give him a call, (678) 688-8107

He saves our bacon out here daily, the man is a saint, look him up on FaceBook, Haggai Automotive and Diesel Repair. I know the man, been to the shop, he is the real deal and one of the few honest mechanics left in this country.
