Ok I need some advice from some people in the know! I contacted MTC Truck driving school for information on Monday of this week. Guy told me the way it works is either pay $5995 up front or let them find you a job with a carrier before you start who will pay. Also during this time I found out FedEx is hiring drivers for the holiday season. Well I got the call saying I have a job offer from swift and I can start on Monday or the 19th. When I said I would like to work till Christmas making really good money. He said it would be harder to get me placed if I waited but he could do it. And said to call back around dec 15. About an hour later I got a call from his boss telling me he is new and that if I didnt start swift would look at it as turning down the job and it would be very hard to find any carrier for them to place me with if I turned one down, and swift would never hire me. Now it would be nice to start school in jan with a lot of money in the bank. But if this sounds true I will start now. Just wanted to see if this was the norm or if the school is just trying to get my money.
thanks,
Mark

If they are willing to put a gun to your head before you are even hired, would this truly be the carrier you would want to work for???
-
I wasn't even really thinking it was the company. I figure it is just the school trying to get another butt in a desk.
I will feel much better waiting and if they really can't help me in Jan I didn't really notice a shortage of cdl mills!
thanks,

Uh huh, and Santa Claus is going to be here soon, hmmm
Best advice(atleast my advice) is to tell them you are aware of the looming driver shortage crisis
If they wont work with you, thank you and move on, also the stink of being pressured is a perfectly good sign this particular school should be a no go
I have a recommendation I'd try, contact Marten Transport up in Chippewa Falls WI, they did work closely with the Tech College close by up there(Chippewa Tech College) I'm thinking thats the right name and see where they are at after 1st of yr. This route could cost you less and get an established better thought of carrier in your reference file
My sisters boyfriends mother is a dispatcher for them, heard good things about Martens approach to dispatch and so on. -
Go make some money over Christmas and find a new driving school - that guy is in sales and if he gets you to commit now it is more money in his pocket, sooner. Tell him you were born at night, it just wasn't last night. Swift is always hiring - plus they do not even know if you passed the school or test and a job is usually dependent on passing the test first. How can they mark it down as turning down an offer?

I went to a tech school and got my CDL. Would have cost me $2k but I got a scholarship.

It's the school trying to get you to fill a seat.
If you have a good paying job to do now, take it. You can become a starving student later.
As an opinion, if you want to drive for Swift, it would be better to go thru on of their schools. They do a decent job of training and you will be more familiar with their system of doing things.
Good Luck! -
Thanks, the good thing about this school is its two minutes from my house. A little extra home time would be nice. I thought it was just a gimmick to fill a spot but wanted to make sure.
thanks for all the help,

Im asking this question on just about every MTC thread, WF8MAF, how was the school? Give us the good, bad, and ugly.

"Oh driver, this is your ONLY opportunity. If you dont show up, it will be really hard for you to find another job."
I dont even think Swift really knows you exist until you fill out a Swift application. Theyre right, the school recruiter is strongarming you and making it seem as if he's doing you a favor.
