I've noticed a fairly good number of members who started in this career field after reaching an age when plenty of folks look to retire. I think there's also a good number of "wannabes", like myself, who would appreciate learning of your experiences as newbies. Has your age even been a factor? Has it helped you/hindered you as a newbie? Whatever you're willing to share - I'm all ears!
To the older newbies: Share your experiences please!

the older you get the harder it is to get up and run hard all day, all week.
the older you get generally the more you have acquired in life, that you stand to lose, due to a lawsuit, caused by an idiot.
the more you get jerked around by the public, the less confidence you have in the civics classes you took in school.
that is some of it. HEY, maybe it ain't the truckin, it is the gettin old that sucks. -
My age made it harder to do some physical stuff (and my fat behind made it harder).
But I found from the instructors to the DMs to our dedicated fleet staff including our fleet manager consider our age to be a benefit. We're more reliable, steady than the young ones . (Nobody who is young needs to chew me out and insist you're reliable. I know YOU are but most don't seem to be)
It's the life experience that helps me out. It may not be the same exact situation but somewhere I've got an experience that helps me with the current problem.
However..........a 14 hr wrk day is tiring to this old womanJustSonny Thanks this. -
At my age it is easier to get away telling morons to go take flying leap....
I'm at the point were if you're an inconsiderate nincompoop...you can kizz my old pruny ###.....JustSonny Thanks this. -

I started out in 05 after loosing a good paying factory job (04 earnings $65K) It was hard at first as I have never been away from my wife and kids in all our yrs together.. Now it gets a little easier as time goes by.. Now I work local pulling a liquid tanker working 12 hr shifts 4 on two off.. It is hard believe it or not hauling salt water two and from the oil gas fields. Your tired by the end of the day, and before you know it your back at it.. As you earn your stripes pay gets better, with experience and the company you work for.. My current company pay over time after 40hrs plus fuel, safety, and load bonuses every quarter.. This job is a little harder driven than my last. Before I dorve dry powder tankers, and it was easy as heck.. Hauling liquid you have to be more careful, and the water well slosh from side to side, plus if not carrying a full load will slosh from front to back, and can push you forward even when your stopped, which can cause you to hit some one who is in front of you.. Plus you need to be extra careful when making turns as it is easy to roll the truck.. But all in all I like what I do..

The only problem you'll have is being bossed around by a 23 year old! (dispatchers, security guards, warehouse managers, Cops, mechanics).

This thread documents my journey.

I started trucking at 50. Left a 50k a year salaried swim coaching job I worked for 23 years...4 weeks of vacation/year that I never took. I did get to travel all over the US expense paid to meets. I chose to go into trucking after getting burned out on the politics involved rather than change jobs and move my family. Most of you would tell me I was crazy to resign from my Job. Its worked out well so far. The work is harder physically but when I am off I am truly off. I was fortunate to land a job driving tankers right out of school and avoided the low pay of the bottom feeder OTR companiesJustSonny Thanks this. -
It's nice to see it from all of you oldies sides
. I'm just joking, but believe it or not, there was only two of us in our twenties when I went to school to get my liscense, everyone else was 40 or older, some in their late 60's.
