I hope this question hasn't been beat to death but I just haven't been able to come up with a consensus of opinion as to how long a newbie should ride with a trainer. Obvious answers abound such as, "As long as it takes", "Until the trainer says you are good to go", etc. I'm not looking for a specific length of time but more like: "A newbie is ready to solo when____________________" (fill in what you think). New drivers and veterans alike, help me with this one please.

    Thanks,

Really confused on why your asking this question. Everyone knows that everyone is different and will be very hard for someone to give you an answer. You should re-think what you are looking for. Just my opinion.

I don't see anything at all confusing about the question.

First and foremost: Keep your eyes and ears open.

Do NOT be a know it all.

Your trainer really doesn't want to hear, "but that's NOT how they told us to do it in class." Perhaps it isn't, and perhaps your trainer is wrong and the class is right. Or maybe he/she just has a different way of doing things.

Don't be afraid to ask why. Or how...

Trainers, like everybody else, come in all types. Hopefully, you will get one who actually has some experience, intelligence and really cares about seeing you become a good driver. But don't count on this happening.

You may have to just bite the bullet and get through, learning as much as you can. Remember, once you are out on your own, THEN you can do things YOUR way.

It is all attitude. Both yours, and your trainer. Just remember, you are there for a short time, (even though it may SEEM like forever,) and you are there to learn.

I don't care how stupid, ignorant or arrogant a trainer is, he/she still has something that you can learn from. Even if it only by seeing their bad example, and making sure you don't emulate it!

    Good luck.

I am very sorry for the misunderstanding, I for what ever reason only saw one post "What characteristics does an ideal student have?" Did not see the original posting above it.

Well now, this is interesting. FWIW, Crusher, I didn't have that first post come through either. I was answering the second post. I wonder how that happened???????????

As to the first question, I believe that most companies have a standard minimum time frame, which can be extended as necessary. It varies with companies, so I don't know that there is a "blanket" answer.

Ideally, a trainee would have seen ALL types of driving conditions, from much heavy city driving, to driving on snow and ice in the mountains to operating in the desert in the heat of the summer. The trainee would be completely at ease in all backing situations from the typical left side backing, to the blind side alley dock.

The fact is, depending on your company, you might go for many months without hitting all of the above, not to mention a bunch more that I can't think of right now.

So it really is a tough question to answer.

What happened was this - Crusher saw the first post, which I agree, needed to be expanded on. I revised it based on his suggestion. It's really cooly to see two guys interact in order to get to the point of the matter. Thanks to both of you!
