Well, you could get a job that does both, office and driving. I had the opportunity in life to get such a job. Last year I spent 3 months on the road/in hotels while driving a truck. Come to think of it I have yet to sleep in a truck even if it has a sleeper in the last 6.5 years of working at the company I work at. If I wanted to I could do a lot of regional driving if I was able to get my "office" work done on time. It pays enough for me to live comfortably and to not have to worry about the bills. Every time I go through a truck stop I look at those little cards from companies that advertise jobs, but I don't look to hard.

You guys are nuts. I work for money period end of story. I really don't like trucking at all. There is infinitely more risk than an office job and a very high probability that you will be tossed out on your ear after an accident even though you've done everything perfect for 10 or 20 years. No sir this business sucks and I need to be paid accordingly. Take a pay cut to truck? Sheesh.

I think we have stumbled upon a real driving factor in low trucking rates and low driver pay. You guys like it too much.

hey man I hear you on that "family time" I got two kids that are toddlers and it's a sad moment every time I have to go to work and all that I'm missing.
one just about to start elementary and the other pre-k.. so it gets tough out here specially in a day like today when I'm stuck out on the storm.
My truck seems to be totally fixed, it has not given me a single problem since it came out of the shop with the 2 new head harnesses so it looks like it's time to catch up to bills. I hope you're doing good man

The last office job I had was running banks in Nigeria, West Africa. I would still be there had the f n Boko Haram not started trying to kill every Christian in the country. The one good thing about trucking is rarely is a RPG pointed at you.

60 grand and I'll wear polo shirts too!

Remember you won't have the deductions you do as self employed so you'll be lucky to take home 40 of that. Drive your car everyday. work everyday. sounds kinda sucky to me.

This I disagree with. Not you specifically. What gives a person the ability to command a good payday, is also the thing that makes job security a non-issue. That is, if you believe job security is real.

That thing is value. Without it, you would not be able to seriously ask for $100k salary. Nor would you be able to make what you do with your truck. So now the question becomes: do you want to be the master of your destiny? Or let someone else do that role for you?

To me, the real difference is how much control you give up in order to get what you're asking for. I think you have more when running your own business versus working for someone else. Whether that business is trucking, running a taco stand, or selling urinal cakes. Liking what you do for a living is important, but not a deal breaker necessarily.

If it were only that simple. The problem with that is: you still report to a manager yourself. I refer you to plumbing rule #1: poop flows down hill. So don't be down hill from anyone.

Speaking of plumbers....you know why they make so much money? Because everybody hates that job.

Maybe but you've been trucking 3 years? See what you say in 10-20 years when you roll a truck and are now without a job and unemployable and all your years of experience are wasted because they are non transferrable to pretty much any other job except for maybe a dispatcher. The house wins 90% of the time in the trucking game.
