I’ve been driving for almost 10 years, but I must say today I almost #### myself! Chicago area finally got some descent winter pounding that started on Sunday and continued into today. We’re a cross dock operation but today my trailer didnt make it up from Morris last night so my boss told me to bobtail down there to get it. FML! Keep in mind this is with a automatic single axle and I must say I will never do that #### again ! Couldn’t get it over 45 for the life of me and when I tried the drives were sliding out instantly as soon as I hit over 1000 rpm no matter what, I thought for sure I’m ending up in a ditch today! Ice skated the whole 110 miles down and must say I was so happy to be hooked to a trailer i didn’t care how much it was snowing ! Be safe out there ladies and gents!

Turned around 2 times in a 2 lane road. That was 1986, had dropped my loaded tanker. Most times we had a empty van going back to the main yard. This time no empty trailers, 1984 Freigthliner cabover. Ice and snow on the hwy. I was doing no more then 20 MPH. When Shot hit the fan, I spun around 2 times and was heading the way I was going.
Loaded flatbed behind me, told me later. He would have given anything to have that on tape. Me Glad I did not have to watch it. And I did piss myself.
Would not wish that on anyone for sure.

Id given anything to see that on tape.

Then again Ive been spun and frankly I would not want half the stuff that happened on tape ha.

To the OP, if the tractor maxes out at 45 or kicked out on you at 1000 or a touch more that is your limit in what she will accept.

My hats off to you, I refuse to run single axles in winter. I just don't have the balls to do it because so many get stuck real easy. And Ive gotten sleeper trucks stuck too even in the summer after a rain. Heck, my local concrete company still gives me a hard time getting stuck. Allus too heavy they say.

It was like 74 and sunny here today. This car was coming on and knew I wanted out, and some other cars were coming. So I about 85 degrees into my turn I stood in it. Then let the other car catch up to me at the light. It was new Camaro too, but with about 200 less HP and a woman driving it. So I stood in it, but didn't switch the suspension, got kinda squirrely when I was about 30 car lengths ahead going from 2nd to 3rd lol.

Automatics suck, but an automatic single axle on ice and snow? That’s a “you give me in writing that I won’t be fired if anything happens” situation.

I don't mind bobtailing...truck performs quite well, and gets around with no problems. Good weather or bad, don't matter to me. Bobtailed up to get a trailer in heavy snow...6+" on the road by the time I got there to grab my empty. I've also bobtailed 200+ miles home in freezing rain. Weather is what it is...it's weathered before, and it'll weather again. You either handle your rig and do your job, or you sit it out and wait for conditions to improve.

Friday night I was struggling in heavy snow with 8,000 pounds in the box. I would've been comfortable doing around 40-45 in the good lane, but I didn't want to step out into the messy lane to pass a long line of bunched-up trucks so I backed off and paced them at 35 a good distance back. Some heavy trucks went around, which I expected, but when a bobtail Peterbilt passed me in a hurry...

    I had a new hero.
