He was hired by a company that got him a physical, and drug screen. Very soon after that another company called and offered him better home time and a little better pay. He wants to go with the later. I told him to stick with his commitment with the first co. for at least six months since they paid for his physical

Why? Physical is all of 75$, screen only costs 30$.
He should take the better offer, and send the 1st company a check for 100$ if he feels inclined.

Integrity and employment are very different animals.
Always take the better offer, you shouldn't ever feel like you "owe" an employer unless they provided substantial training.

And not say: I'll except the offer after I fulfil my commitment with my current employer? What kind of message will that send to the new employer? BONUS: Not burning bridges through your career.

Excellent wisdom here and I hope your grandson heeds your advice.

To this I would add a bit of wisdom drilled into me by my father MHRIP. Never quit a job in the first year. If you begin quitting jobs you get into a quitter's attitude, looking for reasons to quit. All jobs will have difficult moments. Work through them. Work it out.

Unless he signed a contract, then that's what he should do; give the company $100 dollars and leave.
