Remember, this is trucking and everyone will promise you pie in the sky and then you will find out for instance that yes,you make 2 CPM more but they ripp you off on say 10% of miles. What I learned is that it's pretty much same #### everywhere.

    1. A man's word either has value or it doesn't. There are NO grey areas.
    2. This attitude is exactly why fewer and fewer companies will pay for things like physicals anymore. The employer/employee relationship should be a two way street.

I will commit to a less than desirable job because they contacted me first. <this makes no sense.

How many people do you think they contacted before him, and those people turned the company down?

Its a job, you do not come into this world to work it away till death. Go where you will be happiest.

I hold my commitments and my word is as good as any, if you are my family, friends and/or some special circumstances.

I do not necessarily give my "word" to my employer. If i have to take what they say with a grain of salt, the favor is returned. Its purely business and business can always go south very quickly for either of us involved.

For instance, i gave my "word" i wouldn't do anything mechanically involved with their trucks aside from changing a burnt out light.

Well i may or may not have broken that trust more times than i have fingers. But in my opinion, it was for the greater good and saved them from sending a mechanic to do a simple job.

    Two way street.

Not to mention: what does the long term look like at each company? Who tops out higher? Which has more "value for the work"? Who gives more vacation time sooner? Which has better benefits? Who is more amenable to time at home?

Just a few questions he should consider.

Employer's lack of loyalty = chicken
Employee's lack of loyalty = egg
    Which came first?
    Who knows, opinions will vary.

But, that doesn't make either side right or wrong. I believe that it needs to be a mutually agreeable relationship, and like any relationship it requires honesty and a willingness to work through problems.
I believe the first step should be to approach the employer that paid for the physical and tell them of the other offer. Maybe they match it, maybe they don't. Maybe they say good luck you have no obligation, maybe they say you owe us $100. It's a relationship, and like ALL relationships it is doomed without open communication.

    Good point, and fully agree.

    Communication.

Still dont like the answer you get, I personally may burn that bridge, but at least I made an attempt to do right.

I believe whole heartedly that men reap what they sew. I was actually speaking from experience. I did exactly what I described long ago with a contractor. They chose not to match the offer, absolved me of my obligation and wished me luck in my new endeavor. Eight months later they acquired the company I had gone to. I was really happy I had handled it correctly. They kept me on and I never had to worry about it.

EDIT More importantly, when I wake up and shave in the morning I see my face in the mirror not theirs, and I prefer to be comfortable looking myself in the eye. Also their conscience won't be the one keeping me up at night and eating at my self esteem.

I agree! A man's word and commitment is worth more than a few more dollars!! My father (may he rip) once told me that this is a hooker industry ! Don't be the hooker who jumps from one bed to another for a few more cents, I took his advice and did quite well over the years! I said hooker because it won't let me write the (WH ) word
